The Tramp Brigade Mess is a Sequicentennial unit that will exist from 2007-2015, solely to represent the South Carolina Infantry solider and specifically the "Tramp Brigade." The mess was formed in May of this year and will be a sub-unit of the SCAR.

Whenever we aren't augmenting the SCAR , the TBM will support quality events in the Southeast. The core impression will be of a 17th SC soldier, of which numerous books, letters and diaries are written. Many of those historical records will be posted on the AC forum. Individuals are not required to quit their current units however; this mess augments and allows reenactors from SC/NC to attend campaigner events, provided that the basic guidelines are met. Also this a "flat"organization, where all mess members have an equal say, as long as the mission of historical accuracy is maintained and the goal of representing the 17th SC is met.

Although "living histories" programs are important, the TBM will more oriented toward marching and tactical events that operate in real time, are military focused, and also emphasize first person impression. Other events will be considered on a case by case basis. Members are required to develop an accurate character/persona/background that is based on actual common soldiers.

During the 150th Anniversary this unit will represent the Tramp Brigade in various commemorative events and we will follow their route and try to parallel their movements in the selection of our events. We will also sponsor events in the "Charleston Campaign" and the The South Carolina/North Carolina Coastal areas.

A basic Union-impression isn't required but, members should maintain a kit in case we cannot attend as SC soldiers. In any case I am looking for good personalities and people that respect their comrades in all modes of this hobby. At a minimum I wish to attend four events per year with a maximum of eight.

Brian McGarrahan updated our website and I am impressed with out new look and the information collected. The TBM will attend the Palmetto Battalion "School of the NCO" in Florence, January 12 & 13 th at the Columns Event site. Those wishing to join the mess can meet us there.

We have reorganized and updated our website, I would also like to call attention to our 2008 to 2011 events at Fort Moultrie in Charleston. I have personally moved to Charleston County as of this week. We have changed our units direction. We have decided to recruit more members and go from a small five man mess, to a company that will sponsor quality events along the Tramp Brigade route and the Carolinas, hence the name change. We will also incorporate as a 501 (c) charitable organization this summer, Brian McGarrahan has filed the paperwork.

Soldiers with NC-Florida-Lousiana and Georgia impressions, are also welcome to our Fort Lamar meetings and LH programs. The Charleston campaign was visited by units throughout the South. Northern units like the 3rd New Hampshire, 6th CT etc. are also encouraged to visit us.

During this year we changed our name to the T.B.O.H.I., Tramp Brigade Organization of Historical Interpreters.

During 2008 we registered the name and acquired five new members, we also attended several events throughout the year. We are currently in the process for attaining 501 (c) non-profit status.

Bully for you! I know you guys have worked REALLY hard to make Tramp's Brigade a reality, and a well noted pat on the back I will give. With regret, i will not be able to make it down for River's Bridge (I was so hoping to do the march on Thursday-Saturday), but maybe in 2010. We will be at The Columns in March for the battle. Again, splendid job to all in Tramp's Brigade, I do hope to fall in with you guys in the future.

Since December 2007 when I forst posted this thread, the TBM has grown to 12 members and changed titles to the Tramp Brigade Organization of Historical Interpreters.

In the last six months we have gained 4 new members and attended 12 quality events since January, 2o08. So we are not a bunch of keyboard campaigners. We actually show up. We have diverted our recruitment drives away from the battle events and focused more on colleges-schools, history groups, military bases and ACW-WBTS historical societies. Also the AC forum and our website are huge avenues for initial contacts. We seek historians that want to reenact the right way and appreciate a challenge.

As a goal I am looking for 20-30 more Infantry men to help carry out this mission and to produce good living history and campaigner events relating to the Tramp Brigade in South Carolina and elsewhere.

Our first event will be at the end of this month at Fort Moultrie, 1859 Antebellum LH, although it doesn't relate to the Tramps, it was an exercise that gave us valuable experience and contacts. We currently have 33 confirmed attendees fo this event. In the future we hope to help other outside groups and even produce our own series of 150th events.

Our organizational goal is to produce one small and one large Sesquicentennial event per year. The dues (mostly insurance) are $20 and each member is required to attend a minimum of two scheduled events per year.

If you can't attend Fort Moultrie as a reenactor, stop by for a visit and speak with us as a visitor, we will be happy to see you.

SOLDIERS THROUGH TIME AT FORT MOULTRIE

(Sullivan's Island, SC) – On Friday and Saturday, October 2-3, 2009 Fort Moultrie will present a Soldiers Through Time living history event from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day. Park rangers and reenactors will portray soldiers of the major time periods of Fort Moultrie's history from the Revolutionary War through World War II.

On Friday, reenactors will present World War II Coast Artillery programs throughout the day from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. On Saturday, reenactors will portray important periods in the history of Fort Moultrie by wearing uniforms from the American Revolution, Mexican War, Civil War, Spanish-American War and World War II. Visitors will be able to see the changes that took place in the uniforms, weapons, and related items carried and used by soldiers from 1776 to 1945. On Saturday, these reenactors will be available from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with formal presentations at 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m. All activities and programs will take place inside Fort Moultrie and are free.

The year 2009 marks the bicentennial (200th year) of the Fort Moultrie one sees today. Located on Sullivan's Island, there have been three forts on this site since 1776. The first Fort Moultrie, build of palmetto logs and sand, is the location of the first major Patriot victory of the American Revolution on June 28, 1776. Abandoned after the war, this fort was replaced by a second Fort Moultrie in 1798, but was destroyed by an 1804 hurricane. The current Fort Moultrie was completed in 1809 and was not closed by the US Army until 1947.

Also on October 3, 2009, members of the Tramp Brigade Mess will be attending Black Hope, White Fear at the Historic Brattonsville Site. This event will recreate events that took place in the area during December of 1860, when the Pugh family was accused of inciting slave rebellion. The local vigilance committee from the Bethesda Presbyterian Church surrounded the house and tried to get Mr. Pugh to come out. When he opened fire to protect his family and home a shootout ensued. The Turkey Creek Minutemen, who made up the vigilance committee, stormed the house and removed the family. A trial was held and the family was convicted, punished, loaded on a train and sent north.

Weapons should be pre-1860 civilian or military. No uniforms, only civilian clothing. There is space to sleep inside on Friday and Saturday night, but the event is Saturday only.
