One more!!!.........
This bit has similarities to other brass bits that I suspect "might" be CS as well as displaying a certain Dragoon or European look to it. On the other hand, bits like this could be Federal officer's private purchase bit too. No way to tell for sure other than speculation.
I retrieved these pieces out of a digger's box at Nashville. In pieces, amongst alot of other garbage they didn't look like much but a pile of rusted iron, tin, and brass so it was difficult to comb through the box to find all of the pieces that I did. Wish there were more.
I have several fragments of broken bits like this that I have collected over the years. They have been dug from CW sites all over the South. While often similar only a few of them proved to be of the same pattern. There are pictures of these pieces on my web site and in my books if you care to look.
Very few of these bits seemed to have survived intact. Which lead me to wonder why so many of these are found broken, literally smashed into pieces. Collector's I have spoken with speculate that these are often Confederate that were rendered "hors de combat" by Federal's to keep from being used again. Could be. Or, maybe their brass construction led them to de-construct. However, since they are usually found broken into several pieces like this one might make this theory questionable. I cannot say. Any ideas, anyone???
Anyway, more "eye candy" to look at on a dreary winter day.
