John Tobey turned me on to this work and I must say that it is a must read as it sheds a great deal of insight into what we do and how we should be doing it.
Basically this work is an analysis of tactics as they were employed in both the east and the west and is derived from the OR's and directly interviewing surviving troopers. Gray was a cavalry officer so he has a firm basis to draw his inferences.
The work can be found in reprint form from Kessinger Publishing via Amazon for less than $20 and I strongly recommend reading it.
