    Saddle maker's equipment

    I got this very cool stitching "post" the other day at a local consignment tack store. I am familiar with the saddle makers bench, but haven't seen this free standing type.Does anyone know the correct name for it, and have any idea of the time frame? It works great, put glycerin soap on the wooden threads to lube them. It could be modern, but who makes anything with wooden threaded bolts anymore?

    What you have is called a "Clam". The style with the wood-screw has a long history from early-19th century to the "modern-era".

    Not sure what you mean by "free-standing"...the design of this tool is to seat it in between your legs when using it.

    Saddle-maker's bench?? Do you mean a "Horse"?

      I have seen several of the "horse" style, but never the Clam not attached to a "bench" in some way.
      Don't really care too much about the age, it works great for what I need, and She likes it in her ranch house decore.:D

      Looks like it's had some usage, for sure.

        I don't know if you still receiving replies, but I have been looking for a saddle maker's harness for a while for my work of making leather bags. I saw one years ago in Italy that allows work to be held in place and stitches to sewn using two threaded needles at the same. That way one can save time and make a more controlled stitch by not having to up one side and then back down again. You may have found what I am looking for. Do you have any photos? Is yours for sale? Did you ever get responses from members that explained what it is you have?

          Dear Paul,

          Do you any further information on saddle maker's harnesses like the one mentioned here? I have been for one to use in my leather making business for a long time, now.
