I have an extra repo 1859 mac tree that is made correctly . I will sell it to you for what I bought it for $225. You will still have to send it to some one and have all the correct hardware /leather put on . I think Glenn Pier can still get the correct trees from James ? in GA.It is still going to cost you the same amount as buying new though . Just trying to help . If it was me I would bite the bullet and just buy a new rig altogether. Nick D. does great work too, but I don't know if he has the source for trees. I had my old one redone buy him and it is not going to be any cheaper either way. This is a expensive part of the hobby. By the way I have 4 saddles .

Not to snip as I RARELY haunt these boards... but this thread shoundn't even still be here. We shouldn't reiterate why 04s are inappropriate for reenacting. It would be a shame to destroy a 04 in this shape to rebuild it as a 59' when reasonable reproductions are avaliable from makers at reasonable prices. TEH

Hey Barry,

As I had replied in your previous post about looking for a home, the best choices for you (depending where you live in NC) is either the Valley Light Horse which is in VA, or the Critter Co. which is mostly in TN/GA. If you are interested in going Federal, the 1st Maine (we have guys from VA to ME) is an excellent choice.

I would highly recommend you do not buy that '04 mac on ebay!!! If you plan on using it for Civil War, don't even waist your money!!!!

I totally agree!!!! '04 macs should not be converted to 59 macs...PERIOD!!!!!!

Especially '04 macs in great shape like the one on ebay...its such a waist of an old saddle!!

This is why there are so few '59 macs...because everyone took them and converted them into something else (Work Saddles)!!!!!!!

I didn't intend to slight anyone... the gentleman has recently moved to North Carolina and is looking for a unit in that area. You folks are top shelf, but your a long way off from the Tar Hell State.

Remember that brown civilian hat that spoke to you once it was on your head and started wanting other good things? The hat that talked to you? ;)Keep it.

To meet standard with these events, everything else you had in terms of clothing needs sorting out with a really heavy hand. Your civilian suit may be a keeper, but it had some marginal points if memory serves me correctly. Since Pete the Bugler is actually located between your new home and where your gear is stored, I'd suggest getting up with him, as he has the background to talk to you about clothing and horse gear.

"awe, shucks" . I'm all embarased and stuff. Several of the boys have piped in and offered support, we just need to get Barry out in the field with us. Already hit him up for Carnton next weekend, but he can't make it. We have opportunities in April and May also.
He has the hardest part covered, the big furry beast.

Amazingly enough Pete, not too bad. I've been wetter. And colder. But in those cases, I had reliable shelter reasonably close at hand.

I attribute my condition in this case to my lack of fashion sense.

While modern thinking 1860's women quickly discarded a number of methods of skirt support as soon as cage hoops became available, I was wearing the 1850's method--a horse hair petticoat.

Fine thing. Sheds water. People don't tend to stand too close either.....:D

LMAO Miss Terre. There is a story behind what's going on and I am happy to share with you sometime. Suffice it to say I "thought" I was retiring, sold off some of my gear, got to NC and decided it was all a mistake (retiring that is). I really missed what I have come to love doing. So ... that's the "short" story. They are making the movie now and hope you enjoy it when it hits the big screen ... lol.

Well, I don't have my civies anymore. I do have my brown hat as well as that "gawd awful black hat". In fact, I wear it all the time now and I get rave reviews on it. But it sure keeps the sun and rain off my head ... keeps it warm too, what with the little hair I got upstairs these days.

April is looking like my best shot so far. I am coming to Resaca in May - I will be with Wheeler's Escort, as they invited me a while back and it will be good to be among friends. But, I do want to find a good mounted unit. But, this time around I hope I can find decent gear without the heafty prices I paid for my ignorance the first time.

I need to catch up on the notes in here, but I am going to catch up with some of these fine fella's and rebuild my kit.

Thanks but I really would like to find a unit close to the Raleigh/Durham area of NC. I have begun to make contacts finally (I was at the Bentonville LH this past weekend) but I do not have the eye to tell when I am looking at an authentic cav unit.

That's good advice. I try to tell my new guys that a good Trans-Mississippi cavalry impression is a good infantry impression with a horse. I don't know how to make it any simpler than that. That may not hold water back east, but it's pretty much the standard here.
