  • Field alteration of cap boxes....

There is a really interesting article in the current ( Vol 34, N0 2) issue of NORTH SOUTH TRADER'S CIVIL WAR about cavalry cap pouches and their alterations to include pistol caps. Very well done by Fred Gaede (as always) it has several photos of surviving relic Federal and CS cap pouches with descriptions of their alterations. These would be classified as rare and unusual as far as their being relics but shows some interesting ingenuity regarding the need for a seperate place to store and get quick access to pistol caps in the field.
The photo I enlcose is a Federal cap box. The caption reads, "Interior of the Federal cap pouch showing how the cavalryman rigged a leather carrier for pistol caps to the inner flap with a buckskin thong."
One of the CS versions had a seperate compartment built into the cap pouch. Another CS variation employed an entire but seperate pouch (finial and all!) placed on the cover for pistol caps. Very interesting add ons!
Not exactly PEC but as one can see these are very simple and would be something different but useful for a reenactor to do. That is "if" one carries a pistol!!
    Anyway, I thought it interesting.

Here is another CS cap box from the same article....and "now" for sale at The Horse Soldier in Gettysburg. This one has an exterior pistol cap box (including its own finial) attached to the from flap of the box. Interesting field alterations driven by necessity.

      Very interesting stuff.

I know in Terry's Rangers they were frequently carrying multiple cap boxes (see this 1863 Ordnance inspection report on my site).

I wonder also if the first modification might not have been used by a soldier carrying a shotgun or other firearm that took pistol size caps rather than standard musket caps.

So, you think that scrap in the East is rough, do you?
Ever consider what it means to be captured by Apaches?
