    Merrill Cartridge Box?

    I'm beginning research into putting together an 11th Missouri Cavalry (US) impression and came across this 1865 quote regarding their Merrill Carbines and Cartridge boxes. Does anyone know of any originals or even photos of this particular cartridge box?

    The Eleventh Missouri Cavalry is reported in tolerable condition. The complain bitterly of their arms (the Merrill carbine), and state Merrill's cartridge-box to be nuisance that the service should be rid of. They are now being armed with the Sharps carbines.
    Also if anyone has any leads on sources for the 11th Mo. Cavalry (especially clothing rolls) I'd be most appreciative of the info.

    There is a sketch of one of the .54 calibre boxes in Todd' Military equipage.

    I am working on converting a .69 calibre 1842 Rifled-musket to the Merrill system, and would love to know what boxes were furnished by Merrill with those arms.

      Thank you for the info. It was indeed in volume one of Todd's. Looks like there was a patent applied for so I'll try and track that down.

        Drop Nick Duvall line. Last year he had an original .54 caliber box that he was paterning for possible reproduction.

            Lads:

            FWIW: I just received a Pattern 1859/61 link strap today that Nick Duvall made for me. Nick did a splendid job on what is otherwise a rather humble piece of equipment. To my knowledge (?) he is the only guy making them with correct iron horseshoe buckles. (To my understanding, link straps with iron bar/frame buckles were contractor variants IF (?) they existed at all)

            I imagine his Merrill cartridge box is probably just as good.

                MOC did something similar with the Rebel Yell with old recordings of CW vets in the 1930s. They took 2 separate recordings and multiplied them to duplicate a battalion charge. It makes your hair stand up on end!

                  Hi Gentlemen,
                  I have a Merrill I'm trying to do some research on to incorporate into a museum exhibit and haven't been able to find as much as I'd like. As far as I know it was not used in a military capacity. Have you come across a way to look up Merrill serial numbers, I can't seem to find a source although I might just be looking in the wrong places. If you have any information I would greatly appreciate it.

                  Oh and this is coming a bit late in the discussion, but in case you haven't checked it out already Google has a great database of patents to search. Merrill's firearm patent is No.20,954.
