Now this is a neat saddle. Read Stuart Lillie's description in the letter endorsing it. Very informative!! Ken R Knopp

Hummm. Since the saddle is dated 1803 "the date that Mexico was expanding north into the U.S."(!), and since Mexico didn't undertake becoming a political entity until 1810....

France/Spain/Mexico was always expanding northward (still are TODAY).....the reference to 1803 undoubtedly refers to the Louisiana Purchase which included Texas (all lands north of the Rio Grande), but was disputed by Spain (who had secretly ceded 'Louisiana' back to France in the Third Treaty of San Ildefonso).

True enough, Mexico didn't exist as a country until the 1810 Revolution (El Grito de Dolores)...but people from South of the Rio Grande were/have been moving north of the Rio Grande to settle, as opposed to settlers from Europe/Spain.....including in 1803.

Ken, Pat and RJ, Do you all think that the valise saddle implies artillery? To me it has always been synonomous, but I really don't follow the arty much... more the horses than even the cavalry....TEH

Patrick, the first saddle on the bottom row is the valise saddle... I had to look through them again too... Zack
