Re: WOW! Shotgun cartridge box-Original
Size isn't the question but how it is put together. Is it similar to a musket cartridge except with a different projectile?
I just don't ever remember seeing one.Jeff Gibson

If you are interested in the weapon and ammo, a 10 ga is used by the actor Vigo Mortensen (sp?) in the recent cowboy movie "APPALOOSA". It's running on the cable premium channels and is available on DVD. Not a bad horse opera as they go.....

Re: WOW! Shotgun cartridge box-Original
Chris,
When I have made "Street Howitzer" rounds in the past I have used a BLANK looking much like the one you posted in the previous thread. More wadding to keep the look, and about 80gr of FF. Seems to work when I ram it home in the double barrel. But hell, I haven't been mounted in years, and then it was with a S-Word.
I am a shotgun freak. I remember a few years ago seeing a box much like the one posted. The cartridge tubes are basically tin test tube shapes. Seemed about that size too... But if I remember it was about 1/2 the height...Mitchell L Critel

In regards to the coat, that pic has always been IDed to a Fla dismounted cavalryman, I believe its the 1st FL Cav, but without my books here I cant be certain.Lee White

Re: WOW! Shotgun cartridge box-Original
Mr. White, you are correct the photos is of PVT Walter Miles Parker, Company H 1st Florida cavalry. According to Uniforms of the Civil War the coat was produced by a Virginia contractor, but it also states that it could have some NC provenance. Thanks

"I would be interested to hear what works in terms of blank scattergun rounds for the mounted CS n'actor.
I see no other way which would be acceptable safety wise than load upon dismount or holding muzzle skyward whilst on the hoof. "
Ist off what Mitch said. 2nd, I carry an original british 10 guage db and load it and carry it while mounted and I even like toting it muzzledown. With enough wadding , I never have a problem keeping the powder in. Now getting my fingers to grab up and put those little caps on in a hurry is a much bigger problem..at least for me.

Re: WOW! Shotgun cartridge box-Original
Well, I like to use pieces of those paper thingies for curling hair(?) that I also make pistol rounds out of. They ( at least in my experience) practically disintegrate on ignition so there is nothing much left to burn. Having said that though I have been thinking about trying making up some more correct looking shotgun rounds and seeing if I can use cream of wheat in them like a bigger badder version of a fake pistol round. I like carrying my shotgun but they do eat powder. I have live fired mine and epxerimented with different loads with about 60gr working pretty well but for reenacting I use about 80 grains Like Mitch said. That works well and goes boom and boom.Patrick McAllister

Re: WOW! Shotgun cartridge box-Original
Hallo!
Just an aside...
Actually, the brass metallic cartridge "8 Gauge" used by Viggo Mortensen (Evertett Hitch) in "Appaloosa" is a prop Hollywoodism.
It is a 12 gauge that was cosmetically altered and enhanced to appear as an "8 Gauge."
(Unrelated, I have had the opportunity to buy several Winchester M1887 shotguns in 10 gauge, but always wimped out for the 12's.)

Re: WOW! Shotgun cartridge box-Original
I actually saw some original buck and ball 12 gage rounds once... looked just like a large musket round. On a side note, .69 cal is really close to a 16 gage, so reloading overshot wads work well for general shooting. I wonder if the nitrated paper Dixie Gunworks sells coulded be folded overand trimmed to work as a over wad...? ZZZack Ziarnek

"Speaking of dbl's, how would I go about finding a replacement forestock wedge? My SxS 12ga is an unknown English import, so I bet there are many different size wedges?"
Good question Mike. I would like to know also. Mine is intact- Ive managed not to lose it yet- but I would like a spare since its inevitable that I do. I know Zach Powell makes his own but I am not sure how to go about that myself not being nearly as handy as all that.Patrick McAllister
