  • Sub Inspector Markings

I have an 1859 with the ink sub-inspector stamp about 75% present. Of course one of the things worn off on the stamp is the last digit in 186?, though the saddle has the typical 1863 indicators and C.Prudden was the maker.

So my question is whether there is anybody who can point me to a resource which has the saddle sub-inspectors for 1863-1864. I can say that the stamp does not read Booth, because that much is visible. Seems to read Dodden???, I cannot say for certain.

Lucky me, the pertinent information is what has been worn. I can send pictures to anybody who has knowledge of saddle sub-inspectors, if that may help.

    Thank You in advance.

    Re: Sub Inspector Markings

    Inspector found.

Stamp reads (after extensive camera work and microscopic viewing):
    J.L. DODDS U.S. SUBINSPECTOR

Jos. L. Dodds, or Joseph L. Dodds, from what I have found so far seems to have been a Capt. in St. Louis. Though this has been in letters I've found dating 1861-2. As I mentioned the saddle is an 1863 variety 59 McClellan, so if anyone can place Mr. Dodds in that year I'd be thankful. And an 1863 rank for Dodds would be nice as well. I dug up some other info that he may have been from Peoria, IL. Though he is also listed on a sight as being a MI native. Maybe these clues can help someone out there.
