Gentlemen, the following is an announcement of the 7th Tennessee’s annual Camp of Instruction (COI) held this year for the second time at the historic Carnton Plantation in Franklin Tennessee. Last year’s event had over forty attendees and was very well received with lots of drill and immersion, instruction into the life of the cavalryman in the field. For many, this was the highlight of an otherwise lackluster reenacting season last year. This year promises to be even better. Take a look at the following announcement info. If you do nothing else, I strongly urge all mounted cavalrymen to seriously consider attending this event as a great way to kick off the 2010 year. Thank you!

WHERE: Historic Carnton Plantation!, Franklin Tennessee! Located on the horrific 1864 Franklin Battlefield, the large 1826 brick mansion was a field hospital and now site of the largest private Confederate cemetery in the South and a wonderful living history center!

WHAT TO EXPECT: Mounted cavalry “Camp of Instruction”-(no infantry or artillery). There will be company level drill (last year we had 40 attendees) with bugle calls, a cavalry specific living history campsite, authentic scenarios including ration and ammunition issue and, several special CS cavalry oriented educational programs in.... saddlery, horsemanship, clothing, accoutrements, authentic food, packing for the light marching order campaign, first person and more. EXPECT a lot of riding, comradery, sharing info among other cavalrymen, learning and fun!


COME AND BE PREPARED TO..... Live like a cavalryman in the field! All activities done in military order by bugle call.... bivouac camp, mounted and dis-mounted drill, “School of the Trooper”, all food (period rations) will be issued in period fashion, picket and camp duties.

Sounds like a cool gig! Could you guys do me a favor and move Carnton closer to Connecticut? Tenn. is a bit of a drive, and there is probably less snow up here than down there this winter anyway!

I spoke this morning with Lt. Choate (on his way to the 7th's annual meeting) regarding horses, weapons and equipment to accomodate those of this forum from "afar" that are willing to make the effort to attend this event. For those that may have to fly or drive a long distance and thus may not be able to fully equip themselves he tells me the 7th Tennessee (and Jerry as well as others) can surely provide rental horses and, that others (including myself) will readily assist in providing loaner weapons and accoutrements as needed. Thus, depending upon your method of travel (and imposed limits thereof) our ordnance and quartermasters can likely provide for your needs.
May I suggest for those needing horses contact Mark Choate (choatecav@aol.com) and for additional weapon, equipment and other needs contact myself, Ken R Knopp (krk1865@bellsouth.net). We will make every effort possible to accomodate those of this forum desireing to attend. Thank you!

Gentlemen,
I have put in for the time off from work and I plan on driving the 728 miles to attend this event. Both me and my mount are in our first year of cavalry(very few mainstream events and no authentic events as yet). I am looking very forward to this. I have been working very hard at building my kit and have been assisted by many members on this forum. I am looking forward to meeting you all in person. I too am short on a few items but also have some extra tack I can bring. Let me know if I can help.
I will re-read the thread "living off the saddle" (http://www.authentic-campaigner.com/...php?t=1398)and prepare accordingly. That has been one of the best threads posted on the subject.
I just hope that it warms up a bit. I am a very thin skinned, tropically adjusted Floridian!

Well Jeff, speaking for the organizers of this event I am sure they are glad to have you and thrilled you are making the effort! Be sure to get your registration in. More details will follow. And, keep an eye out here. Maybe you could cut expenses by carpooling with someone or at least convoy with someone- maybe one of the Georgia boys.

I have been thinking about that. I will be coming up from Tampa on I75 to I24. I have a 20 ft stock trailer with extra room. I need to see when I need to leave and return and make sure I get there and home on time. If anyone is along this route, pm me and let me know where you are and we'll see what we can do.

For those of us who are considering coming a long way for this could you give an idea of what the end time is Sunday? Also, you say to expect a lot of riding, does that mean time in the saddle or distance covered, or both?

Both excellent questions, Tom.

We will be in a contained area of less than 20 acres as the Carnton Plantation is in the middle of the Town of Franklin, so a person would be in close enough proximity to leave whenever they needed to. However, the schedule, as it is structured at this time, has the event being dismissed around 1:30 - 2:00 on Sunday afternoon.

As far as the amount of time in the saddle, there are seven mounted sessions which will revolve around drill of various types and paces. It will be by the platoon, the company and if numbers permit, by the brigade. These sessions are from 30 minutes to 1 hr, 15 mins. each. They are interspersed with the instructionals so as to break everything up. So, while you will get a lot of drill and riding, you will not be covering long distances. You will never actually leave site of the Carnton House itself.

This is the formula we used last year and it worked out wonderfully.

You've covered it perfectly, thanks! I have always wanted to spend some serious time doing drill by platoons etc. We had a chance to do it in 2008 at Unison thanks to having enough guys for two platoons, but so often we're all lucky to put together a solid squad at authentic events.

I'm not sure that I'll make it down for this, but I am interested!

The itinerary for the 7th Tennessee Cavalry’s annual Camp of Instruction (COI) held this year at the historic Carnton Plantation in Franklin Tennessee is posted below. As you can see it is shaping up to be a stellar cavalry event and a very full weekend planned with 10 instructors and 7 sessions of drill interspersed with the instructionals. Glad to hear you are a definite!! I think we have several fellas down here that would be more than happy to roll, label and package twenty rounds for you. I will verify and send you a message off line.
