Gentlemen,
The Perryville Battlefield Park is making a concerted initiative to have a high quality cavalry event in 2010. My understanding of this event is that it will include both an authentic Living History element and a reenactment element (see below and their web site for details). I see that the 7th Tennessee has made this a “maximum effort” event for their fall schedule. Since the scenario calls for both US and CS cavalry to authentically portray identified regiments anyone, either as individuals or units can join in. Take note of the bounties paid!! Anyway, since many of you are building your 2010 plans now you may want to consider this always wonderful event on Hallowed ground and, at a good time (weather-wise) of year.

October 2- 3, 2010
Perryville, Kentucky
The 148th Commemoration of the Battle of Perryville will offer an array of unique ways to participate in our event. In honor of the FEI World Equestrian Games our event will include scenarios where cavalry participation is sought and encouraged. The scenarios chosen will include ample opportunity for action by all arms and we are seeking infantry as well as full size artillery.
*Bounties will be available for cavalry and artillery. Rations and living history program available for all arms. The event will be a semi-immersion with a Military Living History program and the Living History Village.
Military Organization
The living history program will demonstrate for the general public as well as for the participant how a typical Civil War soldier lived, trained, and fought before, during, and after the Battle of Perryville. All details of military organization will be handled by the military command structure. To serve as a distinct company you must be able to field at least 25 rifles or 20 mounted troopers. The rank you wear must be commensurate with the number of troops you put in the field. Commanders are responsible for safety inspections as well as insuring that the event standards are adhered to.
There are few near-pristine civil war battlefields left in existence today. Many battlefield sites have been the victims of encroachment by sprawling development. The Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site is also unique in that the Commonwealth of Kentucky enables you to reenact on the actual battlefield. In order to take advantage of this special privilege, it is important to understand and accept the purpose of the event and the expectations of the Kentucky Department of Parks.......Rules and standards......all participants will be expected to abide by them. (See web site) If these standards are acceptable to you, you are welcome to contact the park for registration information. If you have not received an invitation to the event and need instructions send an email or call the park at 859-332-8631 for more information.
Registration Fees
All registration fees go directly to the Friends of Perryville Battlefield. These funds will be used solely for preservation purposes.
The registration fee will be $7.00 if paid before June 30, 2010.
*Military Living History Program will include a full ration program......
Military Impressions
Military impressions must appear as a typical soldier of the American Civil War’’s Western Theater late 1862, preferably in the Kentucky Campaign. These impressions must be maintained during the entire event.
CAVALRY.........
Confederate Cavalry: 3rd Alabama Cavalry Regiment (Companies F and H)
This regiment was organized at Tupelo, in June 1862, by companies that had been in the service some months, and several of which, as "Murphy's battalion,'' had fought at Shiloh. The regiment accompanied the army into Kentucky and was engaged in daily conflicts with the enemy, particularly at Bramlet's Station and Perryville. It fell back with the army, and was on constant and arduous duty during the remainder of the war, protecting its communications, guarding its rear and flanks, and often raiding upon the enemy's trains and outposts. The Third was engaged at Murfreesboro, Shelbyville, Chickamauga, Kingston, Knoxville, Mossy Creek, and Strawberry Plains.
Union Cavalry: 2nd Michigan Cavalry
This regiment was organized at Detroit, Michigan and mustered into service on October 2, 1861. The Regiment served in siege operations against New Madrid, Missouri, March 3-14, 1862. It was ordered to Louisville, Kentucky in September 1862 and was engaged in the pursuit of Bragg’’s Army of Mississippi. The regiment was involved in skirmishing with Confederate rear guard on October 6-7 and was involved in a skirmish near ““Pottsville”” against Joseph Wheeler’’s Cavalry, a few miles west of Peter’’s Hill. At the Battle of Perryville on October 8, it had 4 men killed, 13 wounded for a total of 17. They were armed with Colt Revolving Rifles and Allen and Wheelock Revolvers.
