  • Pickett Line Knot

I wish you all'd show me how to tie that knot. I saw it on the line. Lt. Tony demonstrated it. I didn't get to practice it and I don't think I know how to do it yet.

How do you tie that knot so's you can pull on it and make it slip away yet keep the horse tied securely to the line?

Pictures would help. A drawing in five stages perhaps.

    Thank you very much. :confused_

    John,
I am not certain whether you are referring to tying a leather lead or a rope lead, but I will email you off-line how to do it. The leather lead ties much like the beginnings of a modern neck-tie and then deviates at the end.

    more to follow....

Yes sir. The leather lead. He did two or three things with it then slipped it back on itself and it tied tight. Then when he pulled on it, it slipped away. I ran into a couple of them leather leads on the line that were tied tighter'n .... I don't know how they ever got 'em off. Especially in the dark. That knot Tony used and tried to show us. It was good.

By God Trooper that's close. Fact is, that's what I use, but that ain't what Lieut. Tony tryied to show us boys in Franklin the other day.

I sincerely appreciate the picture. Worth more than a thousand words.

            Re: Pickett Line Knot

You may be describing the 'highwayman's Hitch (robber's knot) which 'explodes' when you pull the loose end and everything comes away from the picket line and there you stand with just your horse's lead in your hand. It is a bit harder to tie...

I have a picture, but didn't know how to load it. Try here; http://www.horse-cents.net/Tip-Knots.htm for both knots...

Yes sir. I meant no disrespect. I think its important. That's why I asked the question. This electronic message fourm stuff leaves alot to the imagination. I believe I've been misunderstood before, that's why I try to make myself clear to the point of redundancy. I sincerely appreciate your contribution to this thread. Thank you.

P.S. I don't want to get crossways with any of you all. Please take what I say with a grain of salt and a shot of tequilla. I mean no offense.

                          Re: Pickett Line Knot

Definitely use the second knot mentioned on that web page (highwayman's hitch?). The more the horse pulls, the tighter it gets, however...one tug on the hitch and you can easily release the whole affair. That was taught to me on the picket line 20 years ago and had used it ever since. Easy to learn and use...and safe.
