    Re: Modern Replica Bits

I'm going to bring several of 'em to Franklin next spring #2. I'll work out the details in person with you.

You're not going to run away this time, RIGHT? That will work out pretty well Ithink, maybe I'll have some spending money then.

I had a good time at Lamoni. I'm riding with Razorback Flying Artillery at Twin Rivers. But I will always .... ALWAYS, remember riding with you all at Franklin, Pard. That was one of the best times of my reenacting life, I swear. "I won't run away again, Number Two. I promise!"

I would just like to restate what Will said about the '59, and I will add the '63 bit being cast and not forged. There is a huge difference in appearance and construction of a forged bit versus cast. If your going for a Federal issue bit, than it shouldn't be handforged.

Can you tell us a little about the mouthpiece? Is it hand forged also? Also it looks like a high port. Will you have any low ports made?

              Fellas,

Not to get into a "he said - she said" type of thing here, but I do want to echo Dan and Will's comments on the construction of these bits. Before you get into a "mass production" mode with these, please know that there is nothing to substantiate the construction mentioned. I am very sensitive to the cost involved in getting some things that are correctly done, but please remember that we are holding ourselves to a higher standard on this site and as the old saying goes, "the devil is in the details".

I applaud good creative thought, but it has to be backed up and substantiated with facts!

Please take these comments in the spirit in which they are intended.............

              thanks,
              Mark

Aye, Sir. I completely understand. I have not place an order for forty, yet. I ain't offering this as a museum quality piece. As far as I know, there aren't hardly any originals left. It ain't cast, its fordged. Coal Forged by a blacksmith artisan trying to do it like they would've done it back in the day. It may not be perfect, but its a whole heck of a lot better than what I was using. And I do appreciate everyone's comments. I know we're all trying to do it right, as best we can, given our current Made in Pakistan mentality / marketplace. This here is Made in Missouri, USA.

                  See you at Franklin,
I told him I wanted that port to be a little less severe. He can make it less so, but the design specifics I gave him called for the high port. It is hand forged. He made the connections square instead of round so that it would NOT twist and break with hard use.

I explained to him that I was going to use this bit in the field. I told him we'd be near artillery and I couldn't afford to have it break cause things could get out of hand real quick.

I feel pretty confident that it will suffice.

You all come look me up at Twin Rivers. I'll be riding with Razorback Flying Artillery. I'll gladly show you this Made in Missouri cavalry bit. We can talk about numbers face to face. Okay?

I can't believe we are talking about these bits here on the AC. They are nothing more than a creation of someone's imagination as to what a `61 bit should look like. I have attached a few photos of my original bit so folks can see the differences.

                      John,

I don't understand. There are adequate reproductions of the cast federal 1863 bit and several styles of forged CS troopers' bits offered by such vendors as Border States and Glenn Pier Depot. What you're having made is a modern rough interpretation—not a reproduction—of what was used. If you do Trans-Mississippi CS, a period civilian bit would likely be most accurate. I'd confer with the expert, Ken Knopp, before venturing too far with something that is not at all authentic.

I'm not trying to offend, but to express the spirit of this forum.

We were told that this folder belongs to Ken Knopp and to limit our activity in this section.

Two problems with your conversation - first questionable authenticity, second not being an approved vendor and soliciting sales is in violation of the rules for selling new items on this website. Selling multiple new items puts you in the vending category.

                              Selling:
Selling is defined as selling used, authentic gear.

                              Vending:
Vending is defined as selling new, authentic gear or in some cases selling relic items.
