Can anyone tell me the size of the regiment number and/or letters on a standard size guidon (ie on the red/white guidon - number on red field letter on white field) . I am putting together a guidon and need to sew the letter and number on my guidon. Thanks!

Someone help the man (and me) here. Correct me if I am wrong but weren't those Federal red/white pattern (regiment and company) guideons a post war (1885) revision? I believe, the war time guidon (1863 onward) was the stars and stripes swallow tail. I am not sure about the Dragoon era. Anyone?

Thank you for the information. I will stick with the swallowtail for my ACW cav impression only. I found a little info for the guidon ....seems the post-war cav guidon accoutraments were 4.5 inches. Thanks to all for the CORRECT information. Greatly appreciated!!Pvt. Ralph Duran

According the the Revised U.S. Army Regulations of 1861 the guidon is described thusly:
1469. The flag of the guidon is swallow-tailed, three feet five inches from the lance to the end of the swallow-tail; fifteen inches to the fork of the swallow-tail, and two feet three inches on the lance. To be half red and half white, dividing at the fork, the red above. On the red, the letters U. S. in white; and on the white, the letter of the company in red. The lance of the standards and guidons to be nine feet long, including spear and ferrule.
However General Orders No. 4, January 18, 1862 stated: "Guidons and Camp Colors for the Army will be made like the United States flag, with stars and stripes."Brian Koenig

If I am scaling this pic correctly, 27"/13=2.08" (per stripe) and the number 1 scales to be 1.8 stripes or approx: 3 3/4" If the red/white guidons use the same size letters/numbers, I do not know.
