  • Civilian Pre-War Saddle "Pad"

Just back from another artifact pilgrimage and came upon this....

A pre war (allegedly Mexican War) civilian (under) saddle pad. This separate detached pad came with an Eagle pommel saddle with Mother Hubbard type covering and schabraque. (See photo of saddle without the leather Mother Hubbard but note its pillow ticking padded seat under the remnants of its old quilted pad seat). Note that alot of saddles of the period had padding that was sewn or attached to the saddle. This pad was more like a modern underpad.
It is a pad or, actually made as a bag- made of white buff leather on one side (re-enforced at the points of wear) and heavy white cotton canvas on the other; stuffed with a filler of heavy, thick woven hemp or jute string. This filler is all woven material NOT stuffed. Interestingly, it makes a very soft but light weight, spongy and resilient cushion about one and one half inches thick! It is in the kidney shape as you can see by the photo measuring 24 1/2 inches by 21 inches (16 inches at the narrow). This pad is very much like modern pads excepting the construction materials-especially the interior woven hemp string. Would be an excellent period saddle pad for reproducing!
I have never seen anything like this and thought it would be worth sharing.
Look for it and more things on the web site very soon!!
