  • Helping Others Be Successful - Two True Leaders

I, with others, just spent three, exhaustive and exhausting days living in the saddle riding the ridges of Resaca under the mentorship of Patrick "Pete" Peterson and Mike Ventura.

I would like to make mention of those efforts and publicly thank those men for their investment in me personally and towards the future of research based equine / cavalry living history.

Thanks for the kind words - as we said - "Make the best out of the situation and you'll have a good time." You did well!

This is excellent!! Leading by example and mentoring is the kind of effort that makes the cavalry side of this hobby grow and a quaility experience for all. The men of this forum should and obviously do represent that ideal. Thanks for sharing it.

Thanks Chris, you did well. I wasn't gonna mention the spewing part...

Thanks Pete and Mike for allowing us to dip our toes into the pool of Authentic Cavalry! Although not the ideal authentic event, it was a very good learning experience for me. I now have the "fever"!

Should we mention the self-inflicted wound Chris received that led to the said spewing?

Re: Helping Others Be Successful - Two True Leaders

I validated to myself that the modification of well researched infantry kit, combined with a head full of primary book knowledge, would serve me well.....and it did. Replacing the knapsack with a lacquered cloth valise I made worked perfectly.

            What I learned:

            - Everyman for himself didn't work to well for the original cast and while it can work for a few days at an event, it would not last the long haul today. Too much to do when your butt leaves the saddle to have a go at everything mano a' mano. Timely mess duties, wood gathering, shelter building, fire starting, horse forage / watering requires the team approach.

            - Water from the extra canteen(s) we toted proved invaluable, if only for the ability to thoroughly insure our small coffee fire was extinguished prior to riding out each morning.

            - Toting the m1841 rifle and being a slug of a rider will beat you to bruising.

            - The gripping power of your thighs is directly proportionate to the speed at which your mount is charging up the mountain in complete darkness.

            - I think a rope works better than a leather lead strap for field expedient horse tying options.

            - I need more practice tacking / untacking in the dark…until it is second nature.

            - An extra ground cloth stuffed somewhere is worth the hassle when the rain hits to keep the tack dry.

            - The Stallion parts on the pommel will definately stop your forward momentum, but it is not the most effective stopping aid in terms of personal longevity.

            - Switchel is far worse coming back up than it was going down the first time.

Well, Jeff, after such eloquent remarks it might seem ungentlemanly to divulge the nature of his spewing. Although I must presume most of the riders have already come to a correct conclusion...

JK I was remiss in mentioning the outstanding direction and aid in developing a military seat you brought to the training which kept me firmly planted.

As indicated by the popularity and promotion of the infantry counterpart, perhaps "cavalry adjuncts" in connection with large events are the wave of the future ? I'm always down for some original, sacred ground, hooved action especially when it provides enough space to ride away from but still manipulate the Circus to my / our own historical end, however micro or momentary in scope.

Re: Helping Others Be Successful - Two True Leaders

For me personally, a Mounted Adjunct with these leaders provides the opportunity for someone whose efforts are there but the impression is not 100% historically representative to participate at a higher paced, research-focused level where martial equine skills development, the individuals success and real time historical insight are paramount.

A February 2011 Olustee outing may hopefully come to fruition.

I know rain won't discourage you. There are other folks like myself........though not a EBUFU contender, yet hungry and capable of a more historically representative experience. These adjuncts are well suited and our means to that end.
