  • Pommel Holsters......

Someone like pommel holsters? Here are a few. I have not done much research on these. Most would no doubt, be for officers equipments. Still, the patterns are all different and very interesting. I am told most of these would fit the army pistol comfortably. Some are made with a block in them for smaller pistols and one or two for Colt Walkers. Anyway, here is some eye candy for discussion. More coming.

        Ken,

Where are the holsters in the second pic in your first post?

Matt, it is located at the same location as the others. Same place as I wrote to you about today. Ken R Knopp

Ken, have we ever documented any of those on trooper saddles in pics? Especially past about 1863. Any records of them having been issue items anywhere?
            Ken, sent you a PM

Photos of troopers? Not to my knowledge. This is not something I have studied much so I am speculating but, I am doubtful you would have seen these much among "troopers" excepting "maybe" early in the war. As I do not recall seeing them in the CS arsenal inventory records nor a topic of correspondence I am doubtful they would be a trooper's "general issue" item. However, when one considers personal preference, captures from Federal officers (limited) and the still occaisional Aston single shot type pistols still found in the ranks even as late as 64 (western cavalry) one would have to ponder their usage a bit more. I haven't thought much about this and really dont know so it would be unacceptable for me to draw any conclusions.

                Ken,

Is there any mention about privately made saddler versions (the type that are two standard holsters on an atachment for the pommel)? I've seen them used out on the field, but I know that doesn't mean they're authentic.
