Moderators, I apologize up front if this is the wrong place for this post, but being as I'm specifically in need of cavalry, I figured this would be the most direct place to post this:
I am putting together a special exhibit at Pea Ridge NMP for National Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 - October 15 every year. My efforts are to educate both white Americans as well as Hispanic Americans of the roll and involvement played by Hispanics and Latin America during the American Civil War.
There were close to 10,000 Hispanics who served in some capacity during the American Civil War, with the majority serving in the Confederacy. But, there were also companies of Californios that were recruited by the United States as cavalry for their skill in the saddle. Then there were Hispanics from New Mexico and Colorado who fought against Sibley during his SW campaign of 1862. At Pea Ridge there were Hispanics in the ranks of the Texas cavalry regiments.
So, I am on the hunt for some cavalry guys that have their impressions, skill in the saddle and knowledge of Texas cavlary and life in the SW to come to Pea Ridge to help in this event that I'm putting together for National Hispanic Heritage Month. I would like any cavalry that came to tweak their impressions to fit that of classic Texans and those living in the American southwest. This would mean clothing, saddles, hats, spurs, etc. Then, for the public perform maneuvers as cavalry, show how cavalry would ride up and dismount to fight on foot while one man return to the rear with their mounts, and all that.
The point of this exhibit and event is to try - even if in a small way - to bridge a gulf that exist between white (Southern) America and Hispanic America. The American Civil War wasn't just a white man's war over black slavery. There were Mexican, Tejanos, Californios, Brazilians, Spaniards, Cubans, Portuguese, Italians, Pols, Hungarians, etc., etc., all fighting for either the U.S. or the C.S. I want to show that Mexican, Cuban, Hispanic culture and people were just as involved in the American Civil War as white farm boys. My attempt is to let the local Hispanic community here in NW Arkansas - the fastest growing Hispanic community in the U.S. - that the American Civil War is just as much a part of Latin culture and history as it is to white America. Mexicans were fighting for the Confederacy just like the white boy from Georgia. The Californio was fighting for the U.S. the same as the white boy from Vermont.
It would be beneficial if any of you cavalry folk that would like to come to Pea Ridge and help out with this event / exhibit had knowledge of Hispanic influence on Texans and the American southwest, and could speak to the public about it. After-all, this is an event that is meant to showcase Hispanic involvement and influence during the American Civil War. This is not an event to prop up Southern cavalry per se. It would be an added plus if you are Hispanic, or could bring Hispanic/Latino cavalry living historians to the park. That would be huge.
This is all in the planning stages at the moment. But, it all needs to be finalized by the end of July. You can contact me here, or at my private email; nbclark78@gmail.com, or at my NPS address; Nicholas_Clark@nps.gov .
Thanks.
