  • Pea Ridge looking for authentic cavalry to help with special exhibit

Moderators, I apologize up front if this is the wrong place for this post, but being as I'm specifically in need of cavalry, I figured this would be the most direct place to post this:

I am putting together a special exhibit at Pea Ridge NMP for National Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 - October 15 every year. My efforts are to educate both white Americans as well as Hispanic Americans of the roll and involvement played by Hispanics and Latin America during the American Civil War.

There were close to 10,000 Hispanics who served in some capacity during the American Civil War, with the majority serving in the Confederacy. But, there were also companies of Californios that were recruited by the United States as cavalry for their skill in the saddle. Then there were Hispanics from New Mexico and Colorado who fought against Sibley during his SW campaign of 1862. At Pea Ridge there were Hispanics in the ranks of the Texas cavalry regiments.

So, I am on the hunt for some cavalry guys that have their impressions, skill in the saddle and knowledge of Texas cavlary and life in the SW to come to Pea Ridge to help in this event that I'm putting together for National Hispanic Heritage Month. I would like any cavalry that came to tweak their impressions to fit that of classic Texans and those living in the American southwest. This would mean clothing, saddles, hats, spurs, etc. Then, for the public perform maneuvers as cavalry, show how cavalry would ride up and dismount to fight on foot while one man return to the rear with their mounts, and all that.

The point of this exhibit and event is to try - even if in a small way - to bridge a gulf that exist between white (Southern) America and Hispanic America. The American Civil War wasn't just a white man's war over black slavery. There were Mexican, Tejanos, Californios, Brazilians, Spaniards, Cubans, Portuguese, Italians, Pols, Hungarians, etc., etc., all fighting for either the U.S. or the C.S. I want to show that Mexican, Cuban, Hispanic culture and people were just as involved in the American Civil War as white farm boys. My attempt is to let the local Hispanic community here in NW Arkansas - the fastest growing Hispanic community in the U.S. - that the American Civil War is just as much a part of Latin culture and history as it is to white America. Mexicans were fighting for the Confederacy just like the white boy from Georgia. The Californio was fighting for the U.S. the same as the white boy from Vermont.

It would be beneficial if any of you cavalry folk that would like to come to Pea Ridge and help out with this event / exhibit had knowledge of Hispanic influence on Texans and the American southwest, and could speak to the public about it. After-all, this is an event that is meant to showcase Hispanic involvement and influence during the American Civil War. This is not an event to prop up Southern cavalry per se. It would be an added plus if you are Hispanic, or could bring Hispanic/Latino cavalry living historians to the park. That would be huge.

This is all in the planning stages at the moment. But, it all needs to be finalized by the end of July. You can contact me here, or at my private email; nbclark78@gmail.com, or at my NPS address; Nicholas_Clark@nps.gov .

    Thanks.

Re: Pea Ridge looking for authentic cavalry to help with special exhibit

All of my CS ancestors (but one - GGGG Grandmother's brother) were Spaniards who changed their name from Espinosa the first generation after arriving I suppose to better assimilate into Southron culture. I have a Cuban wife and have done a considerable amount of Spaniard contribution research in particular of the Robles family here in Tampa (which is a historic hotbed of Hispanic culture).

I live to do the cavalry thing and have access to a Spanish saddle but I am not cut from an IV impression worthy cloth (youns are the cat's pajamas by the way!!!). I look forward to finding out your specific dates for this, and though Sept - Oct looks to be busy this year across the hobby, I would love to come and check this out as a spectator.

    Great work.

Re: Pea Ridge looking for authentic cavalry to help with special exhibit

This is not an I.V. event. I'm putting this together as an employee of the National Park Service. Of course, I'd like to see authentic cavalry and not cowboys. Specifically, I'd like to see cavalry that can portray those of Hispanic origin and/or influence. Right now, I'm working on getting traditional musicians, dancers, food, I'd like to get a Charro or two to do demonstrations, I'm working on getting local radio and cultural center support to help promote the event, etc. But, the focus of this event - and of Pea Ridge - can't be lost in all the Hispanic food, music and dance. We need to bring the focus back to the Hispanic involvement during the American Civil War - both as soldiers and politically. The Cuban element is the one that I'm having the hardest to find here in NW Arkansas. I have no trouble finding Mexican culture, but I want to give props to Cuba and the role that nation played, but that's tough. I'm also looking for knowledgeable historians who could lecture. Nothing long and winded. No hour long lecture. Just someone who knows about Hispanic involvement during the American Civil War, whether that be on cavalry, or infantry, or why or why not to join up with a local regiment and fight in a war that may or may not have been relevant to them, etc. I'm thinking in between musical groups and all that, the time could be filled with Civil War cavalry demonstrations, then music, then Charro demonstrations, then music, then a guest speaker who can speak in either English or Spanish - or both - and then maybe some more music. That's how I see this event unfolding. Then of course, we'll have a temporary display and exhibit in the museum that deals with Hispanics in the Civil War.

If this sounds like something you cav boys would like to be a part of, or if you know a little something and would like to share it, get in touch with me.

And the dates for this event are still up in the air. Right now I'm just trying to round up performers and living historians. It's all depending on how many performers and guest I'm able to get. Either it will be a long, jam packed single day event on Sept. 15th (or the Saturday closes to the 15th), as that's Mexico's Independence Day. Or, it could be a weekend long event, or there could be a little something every weekend for the month between Sept. 15th - Oct. 15th. It's all centered around who can come, how much it will all cost, who will be willing to sponsor this event (because Pea Ridge has a small budget), etc.

          Nick:

I would be willing to come down from Springfield. I could have two more mounted guys come with me.

I also cannot forget to make mention of the Hispanics of Louisiana, too. If you, or if you know anyone, from Louisiana who is of Spanish decent, send them my way.

Re: Pea Ridge looking for authentic cavalry to help with special exhibit

And update: If you'd like to be a part of this non-reenactment, special event at Pea Ridge, don't think that you must be of Hispanic decnet to participate. Of course, if you are, that would help ram home the fact that Hispanics, Latinos, Mexicans, Cbans, Calinfornios, etc., fought in the American Civil War. But, these Hispancis were fighting along side their white neighbors, too. So, even if you're not Hispanic, but have an authentic cav. impression, contact me and please provide me with pictures of your kid/impression. The tenative weekend that I'm looking at is Sept. 18 - 19. Please let me know if you can do both days, or if you can do only one day. This is not a reenactment, and so this means we're not going to wrap it up at noon on Sunday. If you can be here on Sunday, please stay here for as long as you are needed, and not be in a hurry to bug out after breakfast. If you must be on the road Sunday, but want to participate, then please give Pea Ridge all of your time on Saturday.
