  • Painting of Southern Gentleman Planter from Natchez Miss......

For your viewing.....here is a photograph of an original oil painting. Research has shown the city in the background to be Natchez Mississippi although the subject person could not be identified. I am told the painting is from the 1850's (how, I do not know) but done in the 1830s style (as determined by clothing, etc.). What is also interesting to me is the horse equipments including the Half Spanish saddle, running martingale and bridle.

That horse looks like it has real presence, the 'wow' factor if you know what I mean? It's a fabulous image!

      Ken,

I'd have to beg to differ. Since that's obviously Natchez in the background and there's the mighty Mississippi between him and the city, that would put our man in Concordia Parish, LOUISIANA, more specifically the village of Vidalia or Ferriday. He's a Louisiana gentleman and not a Mississippian. :) Just funnin'. Either way, it's a really nice painting. Someone should post it on the Antebellum forum.

        Turf war........turf war!!!!
Ken claims him for Mississippi and Larry wants him for Louisiana! Only one way to settle it..........Like King Solomon.......take a Nashville Plow-works sabre and cut him in two!! Ken can take his half back to Hattiesburg and Larry can take his to LA! :wink_smil

Just don't hurt the horse, ha.

BTW, Larry is the "Vidalia" you mention the home of the Vidalia onion??

Gee, do you think I have veered off of the point? My bad, sorry.

        Love the painting, Ken.

          Larry,

Come on now, historically speaking.... as anyone who has ever been to Natchez knows the Planter Class "lived" in Natchez but kept their plantations across the river. Sure Louisiana was the source for their wealth but the river was the great dividing line.
(Tongue in cheek....) In other words, the "riff raff" of the working class on the plantations including their overseers, slaves, malaria infested mosquitos, diseased marshes, hot, humid, sun baked, flat lands were across the river in "Lose-i-ana" from the cool, brezzy bluffs of cultural civilization and the gentry class in the cosmopolitan "first city" of the River.....You know, kinda like "now".
Just kidding Larry. I dont want to start anything with a Cajun. Geaux Tigers!

Who is the work attributed to (is it signed)? Is it oil or Gouache? Is it on board, or stretched on a textile (canvas or linen)? What is the approximate size (without the frame)? Is there a picture of it in the frame? Can a picture of the back of the piece be provided? Where is it today (a collection or private hands) ?

              Mr Beall,

Honestly, since I know nothing about paintings I do not know the answer to most of your questions. This I do know....It is most certainly stretched textile (I touched it). Canvas or linen- I dont know. I am told there is no painters name but that is hard to believe. It may simply be that it is hard to read. Size? Again, no se". It is in a private collection but I will inquire. Best, Ken R Knopp

:tounge_smAh ha! A different turf war, but one settled by law. The Vidalia onion relates to Vidalia, Georgia, and is trademarked, and limited to certain counties in Georgia as defined by the Agricultural Commission. As sweet and wonderful as it is, for us its farbilicious, as the variety arose in the 1930's.
