  • Federal Cavalry Tack

Hi to all you all. I joining a local reenactment group. 9th NY Cav. I will be riding with them very soon. My background is with the Houshold Cavalry in London. (English Military Cerimonial Unit) Has anybody got a set of patterns and mesurements for Federal horse tack. I have not got much money to spend. So that will go on my uniform. However I am a saddler in my spare time and I am able to make my own tack, Belts ect ,I just need a bit of advice and help with mesurements, and what sort of fitting are used. Your help in this matter would be greatly receved.

    Kind regards

    Kieran Forsyth

    Kieran,
This is an off site link, but as most here that are familiar with it, I don't believe they will object.
The Military Horse has a lot of good information to offer, I believe what you are looking for is in the second section to this page... Good luck. T.E.H.

      Kieran,
Look to the ordnance manuals for all that you seek. All the specs are laid out for you on the saddle. You might also want to pick the brains of those who have worked on these saddles, like Nick Duval (who is an approved vendor here) to see if they can offer any suggestions or advice.

Tom, Exactly... The link I popped in above was the only online source I knew of for the OR's... Plus, some of the "old-times" of the AC still haunt TMH too. It seems to me that the better "our" impressions become and the more knowledge we gain, the less "we" frequent the forums to share that knowledge. Many of the guys that used to be in here (as you know, because you've been here as long as I have) have either burned out and quit or have just hung up their spurs. There was a time a guy could get blasted for asking such a question as this... I'm glad we are somewhat moving past all that... TEH

              Hi Jim,

Thanks for the reply, I was introduced to the 9NY by Chris Ransom. My first ride will be at the Dettling meet in Kent at the end of July. I cant wait :-)
