Re: Interesting saddle on ebay.
This is a US packers saddle, (not a pack saddle, but the saddle used by "wranglers" of supply pack trains) there were many types made , this paticular style is made with a surplussed civil war era Grimsley saddletree, probably circa 1890-1910 era. seen a few of them around, this is what my general understanding of what they were used for.

Re: Interesting saddle on ebay.
Jason, I've never seen anything like this military for any time period... The US Packers saddles I've seen were of the turn of the century western variety. Any concrete documentation on this ID? TEHZack Ziarnek

What you have on e-bay looks to be the attempt to turn a surplus Grimsley tree into a quasi- western saddle for resale...Last edited by The Egyptian Homeguard; 10-26-2010, 10:14 PM.Zack Ziarnek

Re: Interesting saddle on ebay.
Hi, Ken,
Would it be worth getting it for the tree alone to build a Grimsley?Ernie Martinez

Re: Interesting saddle on ebay.
Ernie, Not to butt in on Ken's question, but I think they cut the back of the tree down to mjake this type saddle... so you could probably come up with a good reproduction just about as easy as restore this one... TEHZack Ziarnek

Re: Interesting saddle on ebay.
Zack, you beat me to it!! Thanks. Sorry Ernie, he is right. Nothing to be gained by buying this, tearing it down, trying to rebuild it etc, etc. Just get a re-pop. Also, always keep in mind that it is better to buy the tree to fit the horse than try to make the horse fit the saddle tree.

Re: Interesting saddle on ebay.
i dont have any concrete evidence to back it up yet, im still looking through my resorces, there were several styles of packers saddles, the style you oposted in the link was one , theres also the 1913 mule saddle which looks like a mcclellan with a brass horn on the pommel, my info came from a gentleman whom i had talked to who saw my grimsley and said that it was quite simular to the saddle his grand father rode in the teens , and by what he had described was simular looking to the saddle that was on ebay, it is also quite true that it is not period for 1860s,
