• "New" Mounted "Yanks" photos....

These were recently donated to the LOC from a private collection and made public. There are hundreds of photos but these of mounted yanks are a few I have never seen before. Its worth looking at the web site for great static photos of yanks, confeds and ladies.

I have included a few here for your observation, review and comments.

Those are great, Ken. I assume the images are reversed because the sabres are on the "off side". It makes one wonder how many great images the world has still not seen.
I once heard that tens of thousands of glass plate photos (negs?) were recycled and used for greenhouses, which had become fashionable by the 1890s. Sadly, the constant exposure to the sun erased all those images.
Thanks for sharing.

In picture number 4 of the first group, I think that gentleman is an officer in a branch other than cavalry. I say that because he is carrying a straight blade sword in what looks like a leather scabard instead of a curved blade cavalry sabre in a metal scabard and he's wearing a sash of some sort indicating an officer.

I would like to make an observation in regards to the horses themselves. I noticed that on most, if not all, the slant or angle of the croup is similar to those of a modern gaited horse. Also, a couple of those horses had a lot of shoulder which is also indicative of a gaited horse. Their croups remind me of a modern Tennessee Walker and a couple of the front shoulders resemble a Standardbred or a modern carting horse. That large, angled front shoulder allows the horse to "step out" and take a long, smooth stride. I think these were traits that were being bred into horses of the day. since there were few if any gaited breeds established, they were just called saddle horses. I'll shut up now.
Any comments?

Jeff,

It is good to hear a kindred spirit and a voice of reason "crying out from the wilderness." :sarcastic I have been saying that very same thing for a number of years that if you remove the "name/label/moniker/etc." of the horse as we call it today, for just a moment and look at the build and how it is constructed and what it was being asked to do, then there is a great similarity to what has become the gaited breeds of today.

Thank you for making that observation!

What is that hanging near the right foot of the rider in the first of the group of four photos?

Mike, I'm not positive, but I believe we're seeing the troopers off side foot... I can't be sure, but that's my guess...

No sir, that's not the off side foot. It's dark though. I can't see why you'd hang something that low but perhaps he has a reason. Could it be a painted canvas haversack or a nosebag? Also what's up with the pose, is he looking down his pistol sights, and why wouldn't you have the horse on level ground?

I think it could be a combination of his foot and something else hanging. The very botton of it looks like a silhouette of a shoe, but it almost looks like it has a buckle a little higher up on the object. He also didn't follow the manual for folding his saddle blanket.

Re: "New" Mounted "Yanks" photos....

I think that most of these are the staged photos taken early in camp - before the troopers have become hardened campaigners - or even campaigners. I note the presence of items such as saber knots and other gear that most likely didn't see a lot of campaign usage. Most of these guys do not look comfortable on a horse, and there is little "military seat" depicted in these photos.

I'm guessing that the photographer staged the pose to look "soldierly" for the folks back home.
