  • CS Cavalry at 1st Manassas

    To All,
I am organizing an authentic cavalry section to participate with the Southern Division at the 150th Manassas event. We will operate mainly with the Southern Division with the possibility of taking part in the cavalry action for the event. I do not have many details on the main action of the cavalry at this time, but am sure there will be something. That is why I am only saying there is a possibility of doing something with the rest of the cav at the event. The plan for the Southern Division is to camp on a separate location on Friday night and march to the battlefield on Sat. morning and enter into the battle from the march. After the days activities, the Southern Division has a somewhat remote camping location on the reenactment site to provide a little better experience for those that want it. We will doing various scouting, courier, and other mounted duty connected with the Division. As far as regulations and expectations, I am looking for a general early war impression with a few specifics. With the extra expense of pulling horses and care for horses, the more cost effective route is taken. I am hoping that the general approach will be able to get more people in the field.
    Uniforms:
I am looking for battleshirts/overshirts or civilian clothes in the ranks. Again, the early war battleshirt is an easy uniform item to produce or modify and existing shirt to make. Also, there are a number of riders out there with some civilian clothing that could work just fine. However, is there are group of troopers out there that have research a militia company and would like to recreate the uniforms, I am ok with that. Just have the courtesy to let me know what you would like to do. Civilian pants or militian pants would be fine. Boots would be preferred but certainly brogans will be fine. Of course all need to be constructed of correct material, methods, and patterns. Basically, I don't want people showing up in RD1s
    Horse Equipment:
Also because of the expense, I do not expect people to go out and buy new civilian saddles and equipment for this event. However, if you have any civilian equipment, please use it. But if the only saddle you have is a Mac or a Jennifer, you will not have a problem using it. I am hoping to see as many civilian saddles as we can. I would like to see as little CS equipment as possible. But again, if that is all you have, we will work around it. Just like with the uniforms, what ever you ride should have the correct hardware, leather, etc. I know this goes with out saying, but I thought I would at least put it out there.
    Weapons:
There may also be people out there that do not own and earlier war carbine. So, if we get enough people, I would like to organize into a sabre and pistol section and a long arm section. Shotguns and 59 Sharps would be the long arm. Incase a trooper might only have an Enfield or a CS carbine, they can ride in the pistol and sabre section. If you have another long arm that you would like to carry that is prewar that is not a shotgun or 59 Sharps, let me know and we can work that in as well.

I have kept these standards general for a purpose. Not to compromise on authenticity, but to give enough room for those that want to participate, the option to participate. We are so few in numbers, that I am of the opinion that we need to be flexible, yet still have standards for what people will bring.

If anyone has any thoughts or needs more information, please send me a pm to discuss. I am willing to answer any question or take feedback on the event. This is the kick of event for the 150s and I would like to see the mounted side of the hobby play a part.

    To All,
If you are interested in going to the event, please register as soon as possible. I know most units have winter meetings coming up to decide on events. There is talk floating around that there might be a limit on cavalry and artillery. I have not heard this from the organizer, but have been assured through the Southern Division that we are fine. Therefore, if you decide to attend the event, register as soon as possible and also register under the Southern Division.

Guys we would really prefer to have all the privates in gray overshirts. So I have been working with Ben Tart and have set up a great deal for us. This is only for registered riders. Please contact me for more details.

            William,
Will the event be held in Manassas then or somewhere else? I have some family that live close to there.I am thinking of staying a little longer to visit them maybe?

              Jerry,
I just sent you an email with the link. The short answer is the main battlefield is near the original battlefield. The property that the Southern Division will camp on the first night is near that. I will work on the address or better location for the property to be used for the Southern Division.

Re: CS Cavalry at 1st Manassas

Wow, been a while since I've been on, I almost dread reading the other posts to see what what we have to re-address from last year and the year before and so on! So little time...so many philistines! :)
Anyway,To Help get the word out there and get folks thinking about it I want to add to the announcement that we are putting together a hardcore authentic cavalry company for the 150 manassas. As of now we have members from ROb's 1st MD, Some 1st Maine, The Valley Light Horse, Jerry with some of his Hog drivers from deep south, some Carolina guys, and a few old hardcores who want to come back (without putting up with mainstream idiots) for the 150th.
The idea is to give a company appearance; battle shirts for enlisted, and militia frocks or tailored jackets for Officers and NCO's. While we feel most prewar companies had a uniform it is unclear what each was. Therefore, because of images of some early cavalrymen in Battle shirts it was decided to go with those. This was the less expensive approach to get the uniform look. If there are those who have done the research and found a uniform to be made that is certainly acceptable, As is civilian attire. The battle shirts are to be gray with black trim. Of course period pattern and construction , that means hand sewn. They will be used for the hardcore company at Ball's bluff as well. Trousers, let's hope to have a civilain or military style gray/ blue gray. Do we need to say no sky blue?! Piping or tape down the leg for officers and NCO's.
Weapons, as Rob said earlier, the majority with civilian arms, some few 59 sharps, 1841 Miss, 1842, Hall, or any prewar private purchase. We hope, over all, shotguns and civilain pieces in the majority. Sabres, Virginia manufactory, early patterns, heavy cavalry worn on belts of early patterns i.e. 1851, Virginia sword belt in buff or waxed flesh, mex war or early patterns. Baldric? Needless to say no rivets. If you want a pistol , a horse pistol, some single shot, or Colt navy. No remingtons.
Sorry if this has all been stated before but we want to keep it fresh on everyone's mind. Contact us if you want to fall in with the authentic at the 150th.

                Your humble servant,

                  Todd,

Are sabers mandatory, or are you still thinking of the pistol/saber company and a rifle company? We are willing to make the tremendous haul from Louisiana, but as you know, we mostly do TMD and sabers just aren't in our arsenal. The horse equipment, long arms, and clothing are an easy go for us. If you don't want to discuss it here, just PM me and I'll shoot you my email.

                    Larry,
Sabers aren't a must. But if you want to try one out we can probably find you one.

                      Too All,
If you have any specific questions on the event or the guidelines, feel free to send me a pm so we don't get too much confusion out there. The unit will be part of the Southern Division so I also want to make sure I keep those involved in the loop as well and not sure how often they are on the board.

no larry, you can do a sharp shooter section. We expect the company will be large enough to break into sabre companies and sharpshooter companies.

Guys this is looking good so far. With the support coming from down south we could see 35+ troopers. So if you're sitting on the fence come on over and lets show em how it's done.

I don't know where William is getting 35 people. If that is indeed the number of people interested in this event, I need to hear from those people directly to coordinate the event and accomodate the horses. Please contact me directly.
