  • Original shotgun - marked

Speaking of shotguns - check this one out - identified 15th Arkansas Inf - but a good example from the period.

Too bad that a couple of the photos are out of focus - but it looks as if there might be a sling swivel on the butt.

I can't see it either, Zack but I am trying at work and they have all of those filters set up so we don't spend the day looking at guns and porn, ha. :tounge_sm

Hopefully I can check it out later, because I love old "scatter-guns" and Mike's description has me salivating!

If the link doesn't work, try going to www.gunsamerica.com and entering "civil war arkansas" in the search box on the site.

That's really cool! I think you are right, it does look like there is a sling swivel on it.

While this one is infantry, do identified cavalry shotguns usually have full length barrels or shortened? I do believe you are right on that sling swivel as well.

                Mike,
Really a nice piece now that I can open the link. Too bad a couple of those shots are so blurry.

Malachi, I don't know that there are "infantry" or "cavalry" shotguns. The whole situation here is that while not issued on any sizable scale, the shotgun shows up with some frequency, as there was a large contingent (especially in the western Theatre) of "citizen soldiers" that responded to the call and came into the cavlary. While also in the infantry, the cav was a drawing source for this type of persona as they often brought the shotgun from home, the powder flask, and a mount from home, too. For this (the mount) he was compensated approx $.40 per day and off he went. When you approach it from that vantage point, then the concept of them having short or long barrels disappears. While a shortened barrel is easier to manuever with, it lessens the effectiveness of accuracy (which is not great with a scattergun to begin with).

                thanks,
                Mark
