Mark we had a horse when I was growing up that did the same thing. Still don't know how he did it. I have not actually seen a picket pin was it a cork screw shape? Doesn't seem like it would take much to pull something like that out. And instead of a long picket rope could each man had a short one that they could have tied together? I'm new to the cavalry scene and am trying to think of the things we used when I was around horses to tie them. I'll have to look threw a few books a friend of mine has and see if I can find the list again of what they were suppose to have. I won't see him till the end of the week but will let you all know if I find it.
