  • ANNOUNCING: The 2011 Cavalry Camp of Instruction!!!....

    Gentlemen,

I am pleased to announce the 2011 Cavalry Camp of Instruction (COI) March 17-20!!!..... Are you planning on attending?........
The flyer for the 7th Tennessee Cavalry’s annual Camp of Instruction (COI) held again this year at the historic Carnton Plantation in Franklin Tennessee is posted below. As you will see it is planned to be a spectacular cavalry event that will significantly exceed last year! Expect a very full “three day” weekend of riding and educational schedule that includes 14 instructionals on period cavalry topics, 9 sessions of mounted drill interspersed with the authentic cavalry vignettes.
For those attending you WILL LIVE like a Confederate cavalryman in the field of 1863 with a cavalry specific “bivouac” living history campsite, all activities done in military order by bugle call.... mounted and dis-mounted drill, “School of the Trooper”, Ordnance Inspection, all food (period rations), ammunition, pay, etc. will be issued in period fashion, assignments of night picket, mounted videttes and other routine cavalry camp duties. Learn from fourteen special cavalry oriented educational programs in.... period horsemanship & horse care, mounting/dismounting, fighting on foot, sabre drill, bugle calls, saddlery, clothing, weapons, accoutrements, ammunition, authentic food, doing an authentic Federal impression, packing for the light marching order campaign, first person and more! We will even have an authentic Sutler on site!
SEE: Two exclusive, “Special Presentations” that include original artifacts!! Confederate Uniforms by Myers Brown from the Tennessee State Museum and..... US/CS Leather & Accoutrements By David Jarnagin!
Want to ride, drill, live and learn authentically with a “full” company of mounted cavalry? Last year saw nearly 60 mounted participants. Interest this year already suggests we will significantly exceed that number! Maybe 80 mounted or more!! Two mid-war companies?!
For those considering attending this event the hosts urge you to quickly get your registration form in. DEADLINE: March 1st! We must have an accurate count in order to have enough food and special amenities on hand. Only a $15 Registration Fee!
Time is of the essence!! Contact us now for a Registration Form..............
    Mark Choate at choatecav@aol.com
Once received, a “invitation” will be mailed to you with full itinerary, event details, maps/directions, etc. There will be NO WALK-ONS!!
If you do nothing else in cavalry reenacting this year, I strongly urge all mounted cavalrymen to seriously consider attending this event. Thank you!

PS: Testimonials from last year's experience are encouraged....

Re: ANNOUNCING: The 2011 Cavalry Camp of Instruction!!!....

    Hello everyone,

With many annual meetings taking place in the next few weeks, I wanted to bump Ken's announcement of the Cavalry Camp of Instruction. The numbers are coming in very nicely and if you or any of the men in your unit are interested in receiving a registration form, then please email me at choatecav@aol.com .

This will be the biggest and best one yet, with 14 instructors and more than 9 hours of saddle-time, all set in a very authentic environment and setting. You will live the life of Chalmer's cavalry, day and night, for three days as we follow Special orders #63 from Brig. Gen. James Chalmers, with orders from Gen. N. B. Forrest to: ensure "that regimental commanders will hold a dress parade in the morning of their entire commands for the purpose of inspection and drill and training."

No walk-ons, so please let us know if you wish to receive an invitation.

    respectfully,

    Mark

      Dear sir,

Mr. Knopp was instrumental in assisting my friend Bill Rambo, Confederate Memorial Park, Alabama Historical Commission, with the museum there. I was Mr. Rambo's exhibit designer for the project. I have a new project for the Cullman County Alabama Historical Museum. We are to film cavalry to create a short documentary of Streight's raid through Alabama - chased and captured by Forrest.

      Two questions:

      1. What is this events policy for filming the event?

      2. Do you have contacts for guys who do an impression of Union cavalry mounted on mules?

      Your obedient servant,

            Fellas,

While the numbers of registrants for the Camp of Instruction are very good indeed and our count will exceed our estimate, we have had numerous conversations with many of you that you are going and yet we do not have your registration form in! Speaking for Ken and myself, I ask that you please take the time to send that in because we have a considerable amount of rations and supplies that we must buy and it is important to have an accurate number as soon as we can!
If you don't have a copy of the form, then email me ( choatecav@aol.com ) or send me a p.m. but either way, take action to get registered for this one.

I assure you, regardless of your level of experience, you will want to attend this!!

            thank you,
            Mark

Gentlemen, if you don't do anything else this year, this is the "big one" that you should attend! This will be my third year in attendance and I have to say this, every time I think that Mark and Ken can't make it any better they pull out something even better the next time! I would highly recomend this event to anyone who calls themself a cavalryman.

Hey Guys, I just wanted to let you know that if anyone is interested in having revolver arsenal packs to improve their impressions, I will be able to bring arsenal packs for you if I know about it ahead of time. I charge $8.00 per pack. You get 6 cartridges and caps in that arsenal pack. Not really out to make money, but if I can see more guys using them to improve their impressions, it's worth it. On a similar line, I will be giving one of the instructional discussions on how to make these revolver arsenal packs at the Camp of Instruction.

Let me know if you want some. I make .31, .36, and .44 cartridges that either can have CS stampings on the pack, or a contractor stamp on the pack.

See you all in just over a month!

Re: ANNOUNCING: The 2011 Cavalry Camp of Instruction!!!....

                      Hi Barry,

Since many of the attendees may be coming "incognito" I will not divulge their identities, :confused_ but I can tell you that there is a good sized number of those who contribute to the Cav forum that are coming. I am happy to say that as of this moment we have nearly 80 registered attendees from all over the country. Attendees from Florida, Texas, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Conn. and many other states are coming. Last year was the largest such WBTS Cav camp in the country and we have beat that number by over 20 attendees!!

Are all of those members of the A/C? Well, of course not. Are all of them at the level of authenticity that they want to be? The answer would be "no" to this one, too. But, everyone that I have talked with has expressed a strong desire to learn and improve. I applaud each one of you!!

So, I will leave it to those who wish to reply to this and look forward to seeing all of you on the hallowed grounds of the Battle of Franklin, in Franklin, TN.

                      regards,
                      Mark
