  • More CS accoutrement and uniform gleanings....

I just posted some new artifact photos to the web site (www.confederatesaddles.com, See Photo Galleries, See CS Uniforms) but thought I would share a few of them here. Some of these were taken at the Nashville CW Show in Dec 2010 others are just "pick-ups" from various sources. I really like the sword belt grouping with the holster, cap box, etc. I think these have some fuzzy Texas origins but not much information about them. Anyway, a very interesting set of what would probably be a rather typical, mid-late war issue and hodgepodge type set. I love the "pieced together" leather and hardware on the sword belt!
The uniform pants are the only known (that I am aware of) pair of quasi-official State of Mississippi issue trousers. The state of Miss. regs authorized a uniform that was widely adopted although fudged a bit in many quarters. These trousers are an example. Apparently William Morris, Co. D, 38th Miss Inf., was issued these early in the war. Wore them at the battle of Shiloh then the sige of Corinth but came home shortly after- never to return to the war. Although used after the war (according to the family) they survived (as did quite a bit of the family's war time and post war clothing). Its hard to see but note the double black (?) stripe down the pant leg.

I'm wondering if the powder measure is a deer leg bone, or a piece of river cane?

        Ken,

Great stuff! I do have a couple of questions regarding the MS trousers. What makes you think they are state issued? The 38th wasn't organized until May 1862 so they didn't fight at Shiloh, but they did fight at Iuka and Corinth and were captured at Vicksburg. After that they were mounted to become cavalry. My girlfriend had several relatives that were in Co. E of that regiment.

Is the Macon cap box the one at AHC or another one?

Yep, that's a Selma Arsenal cap box. To me that just shows the brilliant minds of the Confederate Arsenals! Ken, do you have any idea how they attached one of those wooden finials?

Whew!! Lots of questions. I will do my best here...
Will, I am sorry. I did not do any research on the trousers, the man or the unit. All of the information I rec'd from the family. So it could very well be wrong or,.....I could have remembered it all wrong. The family owner is a good historian so the reality is- that I am probably the one mistaken. Anyway, my recollection of the conversation was that the trousers were issued when the man enlisted however, he did not enlist at the beginning of the war. Sorry, forgive me for not doing better.
Lindsey, Yes the Macon pouch is the one from the Atlanta History Center. David Jarnagin photographed it in his effort and quest of research on "mixed" leather (russett and black) accoutrements.
Mark, I cannot tell you anything about the powder measure. The photograph was part of a on-line sale with very littleTinformation as I recall. I am sorry.
There are more items on the web site and I will post more photos when I can.

PS: I have seen more than one saber belt like this. Someone ought to reproduce them or, make one yourself!

              Best,
