    Re: Plethora of ebay finds

    Ken,

I'm guilty of first using the term "plantation" even though I know it's a misnomer because I was trying direct someone to the ebay site and they were mislabled there as "plantation" saddles. I apologize, but there was a rhyme to my reason.

As for the pelican bit, I'm of course getting excited. I'm glad your friend got to it before I did, or I'd be trying to sell a kidney or pimp out a family member to get my hands on that! I've always loved that European style of bit anyway, but to find one with a Louisiana pelican rosette? Amazing!

I apologize but i posted this in the wrong place the first time! Stonewall Jackson was presented with a hussar and used it regularlly i had read. Mr. Knopps book has a photo of a couple of them including Jackson's. They are very much like the 1856 universal pattern to me. They appear to have suspended seats like the u.p.

Mark... did you buy that bit? That thing is awesome! I saw one made like it at Franklin minus the pelican bosses, but Niki was with me so I maintained control... of my wallet. Z

            Zack,

Sadly, "no" I did not buy it. I would love to have it, but would have to match up one of my kidneys with Larry's as a matching pair in order to do that. You are right, what a beauty.

I have this dream of having a room with all of these rare and beautiful cavalry items on display that I can show others that come to visit..........................so far, I have the room. :sarcastic

Larry, I thought about you the first second I saw that bit. I knew you would love it. Actually, it did not go as high as one might think. I believe my friend paid about $1250 for it. Not bad huh? Your kidney would have been safe for this one. He said it had been mis-labeled and remained obscure so had few bidders.
I notice that someone bought the Wagon saddle (for about $99) the black one I originally noted a week or so ago. A good buy. I wonder if it was one of us.
Greg, the Hussar's saddle in question is not an 1856 UP but of the early 1850's Hussar's pattern- although that particular ebay saddle may post date that a bit. The 1856 UP was a wooden arch saddle and somewhat different. Check out my book for details of both patterns. In any event, while this is still an obscure saddle except to collectors, it was an absolute steal at that price ($750) as those are quite rare indeed. Wish I had seen it first.
Mark, if your room is anything like mine- I have a terrible time keeping my wife out of it. She is constantly trying to "Chick-a-fi" it. While mine is full of books, bits, stirrups, relics, cavalryman photos, old trunks, keroscene lanterns and other cool stuff I can also see way too much pretty "blue glass crap" and, during the holidays- santa figurines. Its a constant war with battles won and lost.

                Mark,

I'll take exactly one original brass sheathed French/Hussar pattern bit with silver inlay Louisiana pelican rosettes. Got one lying around?

                  Re: Plethora of ebay finds

Having enjoyed Ken's hospitality on more than one occassion and having personally examined quite a few of his treasures, both in his office and his "man room", I have to agree with his wife. He has entirely too much man-stuff in his man-room and it lacks the feminine touch that only his wonderful spouse can provide. In fact, I'm about to send her a personal invitation to offer assistance in making room for more Santa figurines and blue glass ornamentals. It may take some effort, but I'm pretty sure I can find a nice place in my own home for some of the Knopp family clutter. Ken can have a more harmonious marriage by sharing his man-room with the love of his life AND add a little more color to the place. Considering how much Ken has selflessly given to the cavalry community, it's the least I can do. Really.

Well, I have an idea that should solve Ken's "too much stuff" problem; we use President Obama's idea of distribution of wealth! How about it ken? When do we get to come over and pick out what we want? HA!

Since we have been talking e-bay... I made mention of seeing a pair of theses at the Franklin show. Maybe this pair, I can't imagine there are too many left around. FYI: The Buy It Now price is $200 more than what he was asking at the show... Z

                                Alright boys....now were talkin!!

What you have here is a post war commercial catalog variation of a Somerset saddle. The stirrups and tooling (stamped) are a giveaway .....BUT!!! the saddle itself could well pass for a common (our CW) period civilian pattern!!! And, its in excellent shape!!

Note the similarities to the war time photo of someset saddle in a recent thread by Rob Bruno.

If one of us should "win" it....you should lose the girth and blanket, replace the girth system and stirrup straps for safety and maybe replace stirrups with iron ones or keep the stirrups. Its not perfect but its durn close! With these changes you could be close enough to be "right on our period". Dont know what the reserve it is but.....right now at $15 its a bargain.............................alright boys......LET THE BIDDING BEGIN!
