Thanks for posting the link. I'm trying to gather cav photos for an upcoming museum exhibit.

Ok I am going to ask, the picture is identified as Union soldier. Is his belt buckle upside down and why? I have never noticed this before.

If you account for the reversed image he is holding his rifle in the same fashion a left handed person might. Since the buckles attatch to the belt only one way, might it be possible that he being a lefty, wore it as such for ease of putting it on and taking it off? I know this is a stretch, but he doesn't look like the sharpest tool on the shed to begin with.

            Re: Images...

I flipped the image so that "US" is correct on the cartridge box, and now the belt buckle is "SN" Sovereign Nation? I just think the young man may have border state confusion.

              Re: Images...

Another explanation would be that he is attempting to correct for the mirror image of the photograph. Looking at the picture as if it were not reversed he looks normal - cartridge box on the right - bayonet on the left and weapon held normally - only because the picture is mirrored to get there he had to take everything off the belt flip it and wear it with the equipment on the "wrong" side.

                Re: Images...

It's really very common in cavalry images for the men to wear their gear reveresed because the image itself would be reveresed. He isn't in the cavalry, but this guy has flipped around his accoutrements so that they appear on the proper side in the image... IMHO.

I noticed this one too... look at the steep angle of the cantle. Much sharper than most Texas trees of this time (assuming that it is CW and not an IW pic). I think I can actually make out a saber strap from the hilt too. It's unfortunate these aren't id'ed... Z

Is that a Spanish Moss saddle pad?? Also, it appears he has an artillery saber and not a cavalry saber.

Look how skinny that guy is!!! He's a freakin rail!

Don't worry I don't think those are hip boots. Zack I noticed that to about the saddle it looks to have a thinner pommel and a taller thinner horn like a half Spanish saddle. It also has rounded skirts just like a Mac.

John, I didn't mean that they were literally hip boots........but that is just a general term used to describe very tall boots.
