John, I'd have to agree with Patrick about no problems with taps. Aside from the McClellan's hooded stirrups, I've ridden in bull-dog, monkey-nose and 21" eagle-beak styles, none have been an issue. I think the biggest problem folks get into with "modern" rigs with taps is improper stirrup twist. With newer saddles the stirrups tend to want to hang straight instead of twisted for the foot. It will cause ankles to be sore too. I think this guy in the image has hoods... They don't seem to be sewn into a shape like most taps, not that I'm an expert in tap construction mind you. Z
