    but did you have a look at the length, or lack of leg on the guy, and the length of the stirrup leather, how the hell did that fella mount in the field unless he was an olympic vaulter ?

      Good question... I've never had that problem, being 6'2" my stirrups are always long. I've often wondered how guys like Grant (fairly short) managed to mount horses like Cincinnati (fairly tall) and not look as if they are climbing up the side...

        If you look at the stirrups on the last image posted, the stirrups are as long as he could stand them and still get his feet in them. The trooper is young and doesn't have the 21st century gut to get in the way that many of us have. I'm 5'7", 180 pounds and rode a 16.1 Saddlebred for a while. Getting on wasn't easy but it was doable.
