  • Feed Rations in the Field

I am relatively new to the site and I find a wealth of knowledge here. Not only that, but a willingness to help those of us with a thirst for knowledge. I am courious about Cavalry -either US or CS, feed rations for horses in the field. I read somewhere, but can't exactly remember where, that regulations called for each trooper to carry two days rations of feed for his mount. I have seen at least one sutler selling a divided canvas sack capable of holding 12 pounds that would be carried on the cantle or pommel while in the field. I know that as the war carried on, grain became scarce. What was common practice at least in the first two years of the war?

    Thanks

I think I understand what military fame is; to be killed on the field of battle and have your name misspelled in the newspapers.
