Bill Jordan posted a PDF of the Smithsonian's "Man Made Mobile - Early Saddles of Western North America"on another thread. I will confess to never having read it completely through - but I will now!!
Found a very interesting oil painting on P 64 (page 73 of the pdf) of Terry's Texas Rangers. What makes this interesting is that the painting was done in 1864 - and one of the Rangers, Samuel Maverick, is identified in the painting. Since this painting is contemporary to the period, I would tend to give it some historical credence.
