  • Image of Vicksburg Federal cavalry

I do not have the knowledge to post an eBay item here, but a cavalry camp image purportedly taken at Viicksburg in late 1862 has just been posted for sale...for a mere $9,999.00! Silly price, but an interesting image.

Re: Image of Vicksburg Federal cavalry

If I am not mistaken, the original image is in the hands of the LOC and the image is actually of 18th PA Cavalry whom are apart of Meades Army of the Potomac in 1863. I believe this camp was located in or around Brandy Station near the Rapidan River.

The image being advertised and sold on ebay is the image only reversed.

Kaelin, Thank you for the clarification. Good eye and memory!!
Hint, Hint.....if someone could find this image in high digital format, blow it up we "might" see some great images of Federal uniforms, saddlery "in the field". Anyone with better skills than I possess out there willing to do it? Thank you!

          Ken

I'll look on the LOC. I have to do photo research there for a project anyway. From what I can see of the photo through ebay, the horses appear to be standing on cord wood. Is that typical of a winter cavalry encampment?

            Hey John!!

Well from my reading I think that is fairly typical of Federal cavalry in winter quarters depending up time period of the war, location, winter raids, etc. etc. Confederate?- well "depends". Course, nothing is absolute- anywhere. I'd really like to see the blow-ups of the horse equipment and the federal uniforms, hats, etc. Bet there is some cool stuff to be learned. Thanking you in advance.

The cord wood is actually a mini-version of a corduroy road, laying tree limbs over muddy roadways. Both troopers and mounts probably enjoyed the odd dry hoof due to the "floor" laid in the outdoor stable.

Yeah - the corduroy "floor" in the "corral" got my attention. The one saddled horse has some sort of breast strap - would like to see some detail.
