  • Withdrawing to Fort Donelson-Feb 9-12, 2012 - Cavalry

    Hello all,
You mounted folks have an opportunity to to do some riding in Tennessee. Ethan Harrington has agreed to command the Cavalry portion of this event. Basically it will be a Confederate column withdrawing from Fort Henry to Fort Donelson. About 5 miles of the route on Friday will be in the wilderness( This part is for us only). Saturday will have about 3.5 miles on black top getting into the main gate of the fort. This portion will be very important to the NPS for publicity shots. Once we get into the fort we will go into living history mode. There will be a mule drawn wagons to carry tents. So if you have one bring it. We are hoping for at least 15 men and horses.

I look forward to seeing you there.

    Hello All
need to know who is interested and what they might be able to commit too. Have a few cool things planned, may not get horses on this property again. Don't miss out.
    Cheers.

"may not get horses on this property again."

Assuming you're talking about the LBL area between Forts Henry and Donelson I'd say that was definitely the case. On my last event there we had to shift our area to the north because they said absoutely no way for horses. (afraid they'd eat the bark off protected trees or something like that).

        John,
It has been a miracle that we have permission from all of the government agencies between Fort Henry and Fort Donelson. John Walsh is a lucky charm to work with on this project. It has also been good for us that so many including yourself have always had a good reputation with LBL. Thank you to all of you who have been there and done it right over the years.

            For our Cavalry -

I know I am posting the obvious for most - but please remember to send me a copy of your Coggins Test - this can be either with registration, email, or with you onsite. LBL will require it and we will not be able to let you pass 'go' without it.

For those that have registered so far, I trust you all will cover our withdrawl much better than Gantt's 9th Tn Cav original attempt !!

              Fellas ,
Just a bump to remind some of you sitting on the fence . We don't often in this neck of the woods to ride on pristine ground for several miles .We still have room for more riders and horses.

                  Hello all,
Just an update about the event. John Walsh and I visited the Thursday night/Friday morning camping spot ,met with Fort Donelson rangers ,discussed the route . Things have really be coming together for this event.

We planned a ride through but a quota hunt in the area this weekend canceled that. We hope to do one in the next few weeks.

The rangers informed us of the author Kendall Gott will be at Fort Donelson the Saturday night of the event weekend. He wrote
Where the South Lost the War: An Analysis of the Fort Henry-Fort Donelson Campaign, February 1862.

I think you will enjoy his presentation. Some of his books may be available for purchase at the park that weekend.

                    Just a note -

The Middle Tennessee Civil War Show will be this coming weekend - December 3-4th at the Williamson County Ag Expo Park in Franklin.

Jerry Ross will be on hand at the Fort Donelson Relics tables on Saturday to answer questions and take registrations for the Withdrawing to Fort Donelson Event.

Our tables will be located on the main floor against the wall and we'll have our banner up.

Just a note - we have registrations in from Georgia, MD, Louisiana, and Arkansas just to name a few. If you have recently sent yours in - I have been on the road lately at the Richmond, Va show and then this past weekend at the TMCA show in Franklin - I will get them done and a confirmation email sent to you soon.

Thanks again for those who have shown interest and are talking it up - we will see you in Franklin this weekend.

                        Hello ,
Several of us finished the 5 mile ride through portion of LBL.The wagons will be able to go through the whole ride with the Cav and Inf. We might need some help with two difficult places on the trail. There will be several creek crossings. It was cool on the ride today and will be colder (maybe) in February. This will be a good warm up ride for those also going to Shiloh.

Thanks for checking that out, Jerry and again, I am sorry that I could not make it up for the ride.

As for the tight spots with the wagons.......if mules and wagons can possibly get through there, then Marse Tucker will surely get it done!!

                          regards,

To all; I just came off another ride of the ground with some of the event organizers and let me say if you miss this you will miss an oportunity to walk or ride some of the best event ground you may ever see. The property is as they stated goverment owned and the only reason this is going to happen is the 150 th anniversary programs. If you were part of the "Wood Gathering Detail " Or any of the previous events held at LBL then you are familiar with the terrain and let me say this area is more remote and suited for our needs. Portions of the event will be on the original ground with the original hardships endured by the men of 62, so don't miss the chance be there if you can. Besides February in Tennessee, where else would you want to be.
