Re: Southern Horsemen!! A call to Perryville!!

Is there any talk of another horse drawn candlelight tour for spectators like was done in '02? To me, that made the entire event worth the 14 hour drive it took to get there.

      Larry,
Was that the horse Lt. Col Paul Flowers had ? If so Scott Little wound up next riding the horse. I remember seeing some one get thrown early on a foggy morning. I was a mounted office that same weekend and My horse threw me that Saturday afternoon in front of a whole co. of federals at the sutler.

        Jerry,
I really don't remember who had ridden the horse (or tried to) before Sunday morning. I believe it was a horse Coley had brought for one of the WIG officers and he was a little high strung for them. When mine came up lame, Coley went and got him for me.

I don't think I can go to Perryville. Shiloh is going to be my big event of the year. I hope you guys have fun chasing yanks and saving babies from the cooking pot.

I'm game if I can find another (or 2 or 3) FL/GA Cavalry Trooper(s) to travel with.

              Mike,

Just wanted to say publicly, that it is a pleasure to have you back on the "air-waves" and posting on the forum again.

As to coming to Perryville (and other events) I will bet you can rustle up a couple of dusty old troopers down there to travel with. A couple of names come to mind and while they may not be great conversationalist, they would beat a "sharp stick in the eye!" :wink_smil

              Welcome back,

                Larry --

I think that you're right. I believe we hauled that horse up there for ike Gatlin to ride, but it threw him, or almost threw him, when he attempted to mount it in the parking lot, and he was done with it. Do not remember whose horse it was.

Re: Southern Horsemen!! A call to Perryville!!

I remember Perryville '02 with the Critters. Uh...speaking of coming off their horse; I came off mine at the creek at Walker's Bend trying to cross to ride up the "dug road." My horse thought twice about crossing and slippped (sat down) and I slid off the back and sat rigtht down into the water, onto the Yankee side of things.
Yes, rained all night Friday and Sunday frost. What a year....Lil bit younger then, too.

I should be there this year!

I wanted to bump this announcement back to the forefront as we get closer to the time for the Perryville event. We are expecting a large turnout and as is stated elsewhere in the thread, there are a lot of special things planned that will make this a memorable time for all of you mounted men. Make sure that you are registered and if you have any CS cavalry questions, please get in contact with me.

                    thank you,

Maybe I missed it, but can you fill us in on some of the "special things" planned for this event? I know that the candlelight tour offered to the spectators that we got to be a part of way-back-when was one of the all-time highlights of my living history career.

Re: Southern Horsemen!! A call to Perryville!!

                        Hi Larry,

No, I wasn't really thinking of the candle-light tour.

There is new acreage (lots of it) that they have acquired since last an event was held there and we will be using it for the first time (actual battlefield acreage). We have a ride/march on Friday and tactical which is for the participants and no crowd involved. There are other "living history" experiences planned that will make it truly enjoyable.

                        thx,

That is when the remainder of a hurricane had blown in KY. We were on the Preservation March in the middle of the down pours.

It's in central Kentucky, about an hour or so west of Lexington. Since you're from Ill., I'll remind you, and anyone else that prefers to wear blue that we are putting together an awesome contingent of Yankee cavalry for this events as well!

                                Hello all,

Sorry I dropped off of he radar for a few days. Had to ease up to Churchill Downs and make a "freewill donation" at the Ky Derby.

My thanks to Tom for answering the question (although the drippings of recruitment ran through his reply),, ha.

Paul, Perryville is near Danville, KY. and is some of the most beautiful country you will ever see or ride on. And as has been said often, it is on the actual battlefield!!

Hope to see many of you there wearing both the blue and the gray. This will be a memorable time.

                                regards,
                                Mark
