Just a bump and a reminder that while it is hot and humid now, October will be upon us in no time and we need you to get your registration in for Perryville if you have not already.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Re: Southern Horsemen!! A call to Perryville!!

Gents...Not just a "bump" ...BIG announcement on P-ville!

Cavalrymen!!! Here is a “Challenge” for you.....The Perryville Battlefield is very serious about authentic portrayals at the 150th. So, they are hosting various Authentic Impression contests for unit categories including infantry, cavalry and civilian with “substantial cash prizes”!! That’s right!! With this in mind, the 7th Tennessee Cavalry is forming an adjunct company to accurately portray Company F of the 4th Tennessee Cavalry that fought under Gen. Wharton at Perryville.
Horsemen! This event will be huge! There will only be “one” 150th Perryville! This presents a great and rare opportunity to do cavalry “right” and put a large and authentically mounted unit on the actual battlefield where they fought! The 7th Tennessee is taking this challenge serious and so, any individual mounted cavalryman or unit willing to accept the same challenge is invited to ride with us as the 4th Tennessee Cavalry. We already have nearly 30 who have accepted the challenge and registered. Take it serious and come ride with us!.....

The 4th Tennessee’s participation will include...
      - Thursday evening and Friday day tactical/preservation march where we will have over 1,500 acres to ride and for cavalry to be used as cavalry. That includes tactical cavalry employment for recon, screening, dismounted action, etc. on heretofore private property for a once in a lifetime opportunity.

      - Perryville was largely an infantry battle but we have a promise by the event hosts to be well employed and properly used in the Saturday and Sunday scripted battles too.

      - Three full days of bivouac camping, drill, inspections, picket duty, rations and living as CS cavalry did in 1862.

      - Authenticity Contest: According to Perryville 150th Coordinator and historian, Joni House, The Authentic Impression contests... “will take place throughout the weekend with judges that will be patrolling the event. Prizes will be given to the groups that are the most authentic in camp and in the field. It will be fairly substantial cash prizes donated by Alan Hoeweler - who owns the Bottom House.” NOTE: Any prizes awarded will be split evenly among all troopers. Details are being formulated and will be announced on the Perryville Battlefield site.

Gents, the 4th Tennessee Cavalry Guidelines have been thoroughly researched, established and are available now. You MUST meet these authentic standards BUT, our veterans will help guide you and loan where possible. We are looking for individual mounted “male” reenactors or units of any size. Come ride with us!! Contact Mark Choate for more details.... choatecav@aol.com

First, YOU must pre-register YOURSELF with Perryville....

Then, second,.....contact Mark Choate, 7th Tennessee Cavalry at choatecav@aol.com for a copy of the 4th Tennessee guidelines and to sign up under this unit.

For more info on the contest, “Official” Perryville guidelines and on the event in general.......

A rare chance!! Do you want to do this 150th battle right? Don’t miss this opportunity to ride, fight, and live as cavalry did at Perryville in 1862.

Re: Southern Horsemen!! A call to Perryville!!

A follow up to my last announcement!!..... Mark Choate informs me that we are, as of this writing, bumping forty mounted cavalrymen. Forty guys taking this effort serious, registered and ready to ride as the 4th Tennessee. Thats great!!!! Some additional Texans may ride with us as the 8th Texas. More enthusiasm, participation and information is coming almost daily.

In fact, this just in....Joni House has emailed me with more specifics regarding the "authenticity contests" at Perryville.....here is a quote:

"We have a private donor that is sponsoring the contest(s). He has committed 2000 in prize money for the event. It will be awarded 300 each to the most authentic cavalry unit, artillery battery and infantry reg. in each army plus a cash prize to the most authentic civilian group.

There are also a few individual prizes that we are still working out. The way this will be judged – it starts at dawn until evening parade. No one knows who the judges will be and they will interact with the military and civilians in a period manner. It will be based on interaction in the camps, during the tactical, battles and inspection.

The winners will be announced on Sunday right after the battle.
I will have the specifics posted up on the website in the next couple of days." (end quote)

I believe what one can assume here is that the undeclared judges will roam the campsites, battlefields, etc. interacting with the various units and individuals in the ranks. Therefore, our own 4th Tennessee Cavalry can expect to be judged at any time. As such, the unit should expect to remain in proper period military decorum, chain of command, etc. at all times. As individuals, everywhere even in camp, that includes proper period attire, mindset, social interaction, etc. at all times. In other words, no modern conversations/terminology, food, or articles within site or ear shot of outside spectators.

Gents, its not about the money. Its a pittance but it is about doing this right and having fun- the cavalry way! This will be a stellar 150th event. .......
If you havn't signed up - get after it!!! Need a copy of the 4th Tennessee's guidelines? Contact Mark (choatecav@aol.com) or myself.

          Ken,
Can you shed any light on who the Texans are? I keep hoping that I will be well enough medically to attend. It would be easier for me to attend if I could carpool with anyone heading East from Texas.

                  Jeff and Andrew,

While I do admire your mercenary motivation.....hopefully there will be much more for you to carry away from this event that a "pocketful of money."

Seriously, if there are any of you out there who are planning to attend this event (blue or gray) please be aware that the registration closes next weekend.

                  See you there,

I am going to register just in case things work out. I am hoping to get the approval from my doctor to attend. I think I will get that. My only problem is that my trailer is down. Figures, new truck and now the trailer needs work. I am still working on a way to get me and my horse there.
