Hey All,
Following on the heels of the my post about Perryville, I figured it would be sensible to start an open discussion about events for next season, and the remainder of the 150ths that would have interest to us cavalry types.
I, and the 1st Maine will be directly working on a few things coming up, and potential some other gigs. I'd like to hear from the rest of you out there to see what you all are working on, and what might be worthwhile to attend.
In the planning stages, and sure to happen:
2012
150th Perryville
150th Unison-Awesome event for cavalry, staged by cavalry, and designed by cavalry, all on original ground
2013
150th Battle of Aldie-For those rusty on their eastern theater cavalry history, this battle took place during the G-burg campaign, after Brandy Station (June 17th). The battle took place in Loudon County (northern VA) in the town of Aldie. It was a blood bath for the boys in blue due to poor tactical management. The event will be held on the exact spot of the original battlefield. The event MAY feature a campaign march component once the spectator portion is done.
Potential gigs, that are likely to happen:
2012 Federal Cavalry camp of Instruction. Similar in concept to what the 7th TN has done, but Federal in focus, and held in south central PA.
2013 150th Gettysburg-Alright, admit it, many of us will be there, just as many of us were at the sweatbox known as Manassas this summer. That being the case, I am going to throw my hat into the ring to host a Federal cavalry campaign company. We will have some sort of march to the event site, have lots of additional period activities above and beyond what the event offers, and will of course take part in the festival where appropriate. If yer gonna go, you might as well pitch in together to have some fun in a sea of nonsense!
Future Pie in the Sky:
I've got an idea about a '64 event, but is just an idea at this point. Additionally I would LOVE to see an Appomattox campaign event (on or near the original ground) for '65...something like the legendary Saylor's Creek event from several years ago.
I know many of you are either working on things, have things planned etc. Stuff like Shiloh, there was a rumor of a Grierson's Raid event, etc etc. Let's throw some stuff out there, so we can start really planning, gaining traction, and making the most out of the years ahead of us!
Take care,
Tom Craig
