    Of interest.............

-Noted differences between Spanish Moss "blankets" and "Mats"

    -Valises in significant numbers

    -Cruppers....to CS cavalry!!

-Also, that cavalry is being issued cartridge boxes with "belts"!! Ala infantry! I have a whole article on this subject on my web site.

    GREAT STUFF!! Keep it coming!

Ok, this next issue comes from the CSR of Lt. O.F. Bledsoe, and is the only Cavalry return in his file:

August 29th 1863 - To Capt. Boyd, O.O. Jackson's Cavalry Division at Morton MS

      894 Pistol Holsters

        Ken,

I was surprised to see the number of valises ordered late in the war. Do we know if they were leather or canvas??

Mark, Could have been either leather or canvas at that time depending upon the leather supplies (types) on hand. I will surmise that canvas would have been slightly more likely but considering the location of the issue and a host of other variables there is alot of room for speculation and therefore error.
As for cruppers, they were standard issue from some aresenals for a long time but I cannto suggest how they looked beyond the ordnance manuals. There is very little Confederate manufacturing or detailed info on this item.
