  • Ordnance Issues to the 8th Confederate Cavalry (Wades)

Another interesting regiment, this time made up of 4 Mississippi and 6 Alabama companies that were brought together to for a regiment in the summer of 1862. The 4 Mississippi companies and some of the Alabama companies had seen a good bit of service in late 1861 and during the Shiloh campaign. A few interesting things, such as the issue of Saber knots and colts revolving carbines in 1864....

The gun boot thing keeps coming up. I wonder what that looked liked and how it was used. Has anyone seen a reference in a manual or school of trooper for the use of the gun boot during this period?

Could it be the carbine bucket? Like what the Dragoons used?

It could be, but I haven't read about its use during the CW or in a manual written during the war. Unless I have completly missed it.

The gun boots seem to be VERY common, and it seems like the Ordnance people in Memphis (and later Columbus MS) were making versions for both Carbines and double barreled shotguns.

I seem to have read somewhere that the gun boot was discontinued in the late 1850's for regulars, but I guess the Confederates liked the idea of it.

Re: Ordnance Issues to the 8th Confederate Cavalry (Wades)

I note the disparity in price between the horses "received" and those "captured". I wonder why? Was it simply the value assessed regarding the "quality" (i.e. age, confirmation, soundness, etc.) of the horse flesh or perhaps more related to their post-battle condition? No way to know I suppose. I would suggest the disparity in price placed upon the mules received was most likely quality, age and or size related. This is interesting information! Thanks Will!

PS: For those with an interest in "real-time" CS literary works, I note an excellent book about Wade's 8th Confederate Cavalry. It comprises a well edited effort taken from the letters of George Knox Miller. A considerable amount of very fine information about life in the field that can provide a great many details about Confederate cavalry "on the line". I highly recommend it.

The difference between musket and revolver caps (& even shotgun caps) makes total sense. What is the entry for "gun caps" right after "carbine or musket caps?"

                      Ken,

You and I must have been replying at almost the same moment as I did not see yours until I was finished, but the disparity you speak of is noteworthy. Heaven knows what kind of shape those $50 animals were in at time of capture. Conversely, can you imagine how fine that $400 Mule must have been?

I also note the one eyed horses going at rates comparable to normal horses.

I also noticed at least 3 roans and 3 "creams", which around here would refer to a palomino, claybank or light colored dun or buckskin. Guess that blows the "no buckskins or palomino" rule out of the water. Still searching for the paints and aps. On a serious note, I wonder how many of these horses were gaited?
