  • Ordnance Returns of the 2nd Mississippi Cavalry

This regiment was organized in the spring of 1862 to be the 47th Mississippi Infantry, and sometimes known as the 42nd or 47th Mississippi Cavalry this was changed and was known for a time as the 4th Mississippi Cavalry before being numbered as the "2nd". Records after the summer of 1862 are scarce, with only one, which is listed last. I've read that they captured a bunch of short Enfield rifles at Thompson Station in March 1863.

Re: Ordnance Returns of the 2nd Mississippi Cavalry

I find it interesting that there are alot of holsters issued but few pistols. Part of me wonders if the pistols were the mens private property and the government just issued the holster. There is a diary at the University of Mississippi belonging to one of the men in the 2nd, I looked it over a long time ago. This is actually a pet regiment for me. My girlfriend and one of my best friends had relatives in this regiment.

What does it mean by a pr holsters? Surely not a pair of pommel holsters but a pair or belt holsters. Why a pair? Some troopers carrying 2 pistols?

        Good question, John.

I don't have an answer for you, but I want to add an additional question:

Will, you said in the intro of this thread: "I've read that they captured a bunch of short Enfield rifles at Thompson Station in March 1863." I just happen to be reading on this subject at the moment, as well and when you say "short Enfield rifles" are you referring to the Enfield Carbine or a 3 bander that is slightly shortened??

        thx,
        Mark

I would bet they got their hands on some P1858 Enfield Rifles.... they kind that takes the large saber bayonet.

            Mark,

I'm talking about the 2 band Enfield Rifle that had the saber bayonet. I want to say they captured them from the 22nd Wisconsin.

As for the holsters, I don't know. I've always thought they were for pommel holsters to go with horse pistols. I've seen a number of issues of single shot horse pistols in early war cav units in the deep south....

Re: Ordnance Returns of the 2nd Mississippi Cavalry

2 band Enfield rifles would be P1856, P1858 Army, P1858 Navy & P1860 Army The difference is in the twist rate of the barrel's rifling. The P1856 & P1858 Army had 3 groove, 1 twist in 72 inches which is slow for a large (500+ grains)conical bullet; The P1858 Navy & P1860 Army had a 5 groove, progressive depth 1 twist in 48 inches which produced a faster spin and dramatically improved the accuraccy.

All of these are similar in appearance to the P1858 navy repros currently on the market. The difference in the army and navy models are steel or brass furniture. Here are 2 pics showing my P1860 Army short rifle or NCO rifle. Note the Steel butplate, trigger guard & nose cap.

The P1861 artillery carbine or Musketoon & Cav carbine are the shortest of the Enfield P1853 family.

Was Gen Sherman's response upon hearing the capture and execution of 3 reporters who had followed from Atlanta, by the rebels.
