  • Great photo of TM Federal Cavalrymen!

I recently found this very nice, clear and amazingly candid photo of mounted western Federals in the book...WARMAN'S CIVIL WAR COLLECTIBLES, Vol. 3 (graciously given to me by my Old Pard, Dennis Landry). The book is an identification and price guide type book. The caption with the photo reads..."Outdoor CDV of three mounted Union cavalry troopers by L. W. McScholer, Weston, Missouri" and puts the value of the CDV at $2,00 - $2,500.
Anyway, if accurate, the photo is perhaps the best I have ever seen of TM Federal cavalrymen. Very candid! Note their clothing, equipments, their swagger or the way they sit their horses and so much more. The one on the left appears quite young too. Comments???

BTW, this inspired me to get off my butt and post some new photos on my web site. I just uploaded about thirty-five new photos of mounted Federals and/or Federal horses...

see www.confederatesaddles.com Then go to "Photo Galleries" and look under "Mounted Federals".

ALL FREE! Including some great shots of horse equipment, fine period horse flesh, troopers in posed and candid positions, General officer's horses... all, with great opportunities for observing the "what" and "how" of field equipments, etc. Some of these photos have been posted here before and some are un-published. I am constantly finding and uploading more excellent artifact and period photos to the site as well as putting cavalry type things on my "for sale" area so, take a look and go back often.

Is that Tommy Helton on the white horse? I find the pommel holster and the brass medallion (doesn't really look like a heart to me) on the breastcollar pretty neat. I didn't think they were used much out west.

I think that is a heart shape on the breast collar. Double pommel holsters, wide brim hat and pants tucked into his knee high boots. Pretty farby, huh?
Is he an officer? I don't see shoulder boards.

I like how each one wears his jacket just a little different. Look at how tight the jackets fit the men. Lean mean fighting men. Love it thanks for posting.

Not only do they wear their jackets different, but they sit their horses different. Seems like our fella on the right with the fancy do-dads also has more of a trained riding style with his feet up underneath him instead of pointed out in front. Would that lend another clue as to him being an officer?

You can see buttons on collar of the fellow on the right leading me to think he is enlisted.

Ken- I enjoyed looking at your Mounted Federal's gallery. I was particularly amused by picture #30 of General Gillmore. http://confederatesaddles.com/cswp/?...d=718&pid=1319
A man of very short stature, it looks like he has a two step mounting platform outside of his tent. Probably a good thing, otherwise he'd look like a 6 year old trying to climb into a bunk bed. If he ever got unhorsed, I suspect he'd stay that way until someone came along to lend a boost. It's like the monkey that got the giraffe pregnant (his friends put him up to it).
