  • Ordnance Records of the 6th South Carolina Cavalry & 16th SC Cav Batt.

A South Carolina Regiment today. The 6th was formed from the 16th SC Cav Batt and additional companies. Served in SC until 1864 when they were sent to join the ANV. A really interesting thing is that there is record of at least 1 of the rare Keen and Walker carbines being in the regiment at one point, as it was turned back into to the Ordnance department in March 1864. Also of interest is the listing of issues of Cook and Brothers carbines to the regiment in 1864 while at the same time Saber Belts and Knots were still being issued.

Forgive me of my ignorance, but what is a Keen and Walker?

It's a rare C.S. made breachloader. It was made in Virginia and only about 280 were made.
