  • Any good CS mounted Cav units in Gettysburg 2013?

    Fellows,
a customer of mine is searching for good CS cav . units that will be in Gettysburg 2013 for the reenactment. They want to bring their own horse with them! Yes by plane! Anyway if there are groups that are interested in accepting ca. 6 men with horses I would give the contact address to him. They reenact many eras and are a top notch group in roman time! Jan:

For years, "authentics" have avoided the Gettysburg Dog and Pony show in droves. A few years ago, Chris Anders staged a more-historically accurate event at the same time that had some support from the authentic community. I'm sure "Gettysburg" is seen at the benchmark for the American Civil War across the pond. But here, the annual Gettysburg re-enactment has become a symbol of just about everything that can be wrong in this hobby.

If your friends want to come to an "authentic" event, I'd steer them to a Perryville or other equally historically accurate event. These events may not have the internation brand or chachet of a "Gettysburg," but they will be a far more enriching and realistic experience.

Re: Any good CS mounted Cav units in Gettysburg 2013?

        All,

In early December Ken Knopp and I (along with some other mounted folks) were kindly invited by Matt Woodburn to the annual meeting of the WIG and we accepted. At this meeting the Mega-events of 2013 were topics and both G'burg as well as Chickamauga were on the table for discussion. Since we are in the midst of the 150's, efforts are being made to carve out authentic adjuncts to some of these just as we have seen at 1st Manassas and as we will see at Shiloh. While some may attend the Gettysburg event of their own volition, Chickamauga will be the "large" event that will see a formal effort for the creation of an adjunct to the main event.

I agree with this personally as well, as it is a bit more centrally located for folks who would be pulling horse trailers whether they are coming from the northeast or the southwest, mid-west or deep south. Look for more to follow on this at a later date. For right now, Shiloh, Perryville, Unison, Westview, etc, etc. are presenting themselves as ample choices for the moment and the organizational plates are pretty full.

        regards,

I have trouble seeing the words, "good" and "Gettysburg," paired together in the same subject line when it comes to discussing reenactments in 2013.

Tom Craig was talking about doing a Federal Company for the 150 Gettysburg. If thats the case I could see the better CS Cav riding with them.

I don't want to speak for the Southern Division on this matter, but there has been talk about trying to make a similar effort for Gettysburg that we did at Manassas. This has been mainly ideas and nothing firm yet. But we are talking about putting together a more authentic expereince among the mainstream event which would include a cavalry company. However, I think most are focused on the '62 events, but I am sure Gettysburg will heat up before too long.

That's too bad, because they will miss the opportunity to meet and mingle with the REAL authentic cav at historically accurate events.

As Will said, I am looking into hosting a Federal authentic company for any of those who wish to stare into the belly of the beast. It doesn't help those who can/will only do CS though.

Well I can only ask for what they are searching for. They will be guests in our period though. Tom I have told them about the 1st Maine but alas they want to do CS.
                      Than you anyway lads!

I expect several add junks will appear well before this "event" is in the history books. There will be much wringing of hands and gnashing of teeth but alas, those who consider themselves authentics will still go to the dog and pony show, just so they can say to their grandchildren, "I was there when..." LOL. "It is what it is." And, after all these years, folks still fall over themselves to buy the product.
