  • 19th & 20th VA Cavalry in West Virginia, Fall if '63?

    Fellas,
Trying to find information on the 19th & 20th VA Cavalry in West Virginia in the Fall if '63. Apparently there was a depot set up in Lynchburg just for these western VA troops. I know they were under "Mudwall" Jackson's command. I need to find out what they were wearing and what kind of Arms & equipment they had. Any info would be great!

    Thanks,
    Bobby Small

    Bobby,

While I do not have an answer for you on this, I would ask if you have tried the search engine to see what you can come up with for the 19th and 20th Va. Cavalry? There is most likely some info to be found.

Also, I will put a shout out for our friend, Will McDonald who has amazed us with his access to munitions and QM reports for so many of the CS cavalry units. Will................got anything on these two??

    regards,

      Mark,
I have searched and searched and I can only come up with this: Prior to the 19th and 20th being formed in the spring of '63, most of the men came from the 3rd VA State Line. They acted as independent companies in the same manor they acted as Virginia State Rangers prior to the 3rd Line. They were mostly partisans and bushwhackers. I know the 3rd State Line received their equipment from a supply depot in Lynchburg. I also know that they were an unruly bunch and they would return home to resupply themselves with “provisions”. So I am assuming, and I hate to assume, but they would have remnants of the 3rd Line uniforms and equipment and a lot of civilian stuff. Would I be wrong to assume that?
      Thanks,
      Bobby

        Bobby,
I have contacted Greg Starbuck to see what he might know. If anyone has info on Lynchburg dispersals during this period it would be him.

I thought I felt someone calling me.....

Ok, lets see, lets start with the field and staff rolls of the 19thVA Cav pre October 1863. Ah, here we go:

            24 Austrian Rifles
            29 Enfield Muskets
            31 Minnie Muskets
            25 Bayonets

Received June 17th 1863 at Staunton VA:

            75 Cavalry Saddles
            75 Cavalry Bridles

Looks like the 19th was wearing Infantry Accouterments along with a smattering of Saber Belts and some sabers. Looks like their initial outfitting was fairly complete. Will look more when I have the time.

The reports from The Battle of Bulltown say that there was about 75 mounted and 400-600 infantry of Rebs. I knew not many were mounted and this goes a long way in confirming it!

                      Will,
This was probably their first issue. A lot of the men probably had stuff from the 3rd Virginia State Line. The 19th was formed from the 3rd. I would be interested in seeing what the 3rd got. Most of them were irregular troops.

                        Hey Bobby,

Not to dampen your excitement here, but I gotta put my "moderator hat" on for a moment and remind you to make sure that all of your posts include your first and last name. It is a cardinal rule on the forum and it slipped by my notice during all of the action. It is really easier if you go in to your profile and set up your signature line and then it does it automatically. Let me know if you need any help with same.

Thanks for correcting...............Now, back to the celebration and the killing of the fatted calf!!

I'm flattered by everyone's comments. I just find what I can and pass it on.

Now, back to records. Those records for state troops can be hard to come by. But I will look after I go through the 19th and 20th VA proper. Right now I'm going through the company officers of the 19th.

Ok, that's EVERYTHING, from the rolls of the officers of the 19th pre-battle. It seems some companies got fairly major issues of clothing right before the battle while others got very little. Now, it could be that the records are just missing for those companies. I did find that the whole regiment was issued large amounts of clothing in November and December, but that's after the timeframe needed....
