    Will,
Does it say if the clothing came from Staunton VA also? I know that 5000 individual garments were sent to Staunton from the Columbus Depot in the fall of '63.

    Thanks,
    Bobby Small

      Site away!

I'm getting it from the Compiled Service Records of the men, found on fold3.com.

I'll work on the 20th next.....

The orders for forming these cavalry regiments specified 75 mounted soldiers, so that would be the max number enrolled. This is presumably why my 2G-grandfather and his brothers were split among the 17th and 19th and one other regiment (varies with source) when the VA State Line troop was "legitimized".

I recommend reading "On Our Own Soil", Ron Hardway, Quarrier Press, a book about W L Jackson and his command. From the pictures in the book, the dress may have varied greatly, but one family owned picture that I have seen indicates the enlisted men, at least, wore single breasted jackets with little or no adornment and varying in the shade of gray. ( The same goes for the officers as the pics in the mentioned book show Jackson in a double-breasted dark color (blue? Gray?) jacket, while Echols is shown in a single-breasted light gray jacket.) Not much help, but all I got at the moment. I have settled on a medium-light gray for use on my scale figures of Sgt. G W Maze, Co. A.
