  • Ordnances and QM Records of 3rd Louisisana Cavalry (Harrisions

I think you guys will like this one. There were three "3rd Louisiana Cavalry" Regiments. This one is the one commanded by Col. Interesting stuff here. I did not take much time to look but, is there any history on this regiment to ascertain "where" this regiment was operating during this time period of Oct 1862 to early spring 63? In particular, since CS cavalry generally rec'd issues form the nearest depot or arsenal perhaps we can get an idea of which installation was supplying these items. In addition to the Ark. Rifles I note the issue of cloth and linings for uniforms.

        Ken,

This regiment seems to have operated mostly in northeast Louisiana around Monroe.

Ok, l was following up a hunch and fingered through Lon Websters book "Entrepot" and found that not long before all that cloth was issued a huge shipment of Beligan cadet grey wool had made its way up the Rio Grande and was in Louisiana. Most of it stayed in the trans-Mississippi and was spread out throughout the Department. At the same time, large amounts of ordnance stores were coming from east of the river. I think it is very likely that the horse equipment seen here was made east of the Mississippi.

I find all the sabers very interesting. Could they be English?

I think all the valises are interesting. Pretty much ever gear issue had a large number of them, so presumably most/many of the men had a valise. And several sabres, but I didn't see any pistols. Cool stuff.

Yeah I don't see pistols being issued, but holsters and pistol ammunition are! Perhaps some were brought from home? I noticed the same thing with some other troops from the Mississippi valley.

Col. Harrison of Harrison's 3rd Louisiana Cavalry was originally the company commander of Co. I, Wirt Adams' Mississippi Cavalry. Company I was raised in Catahoula and Concordia Parishes just across the river from Natchez. Harrison served under Adams for the beginning of the war, but was dispatched west of the river just prior to the opening of the Vicksburg campaign. From that point on, his command was consolidated with other independent La. Cav battalions operating in the vicinity and was re-commissioned Harrison's 3rd Louisiana Cavalry.

My question about these returns... was the rope being issued for halters specifically being used for rope halters/neck ropes or were they for halter lead ropes?

ID:	222945Good question Larry! No way to know for sure from this entry wether it was for leads or neck ropes. For sure, this is one aspect of reenacting cavalry that we do not see...neck ropes, However, it is clear from period illustrations that they were quite common. While this has been discussed before perhaps it would be useful for another review. For a "likeness" note the attached 1864 illustration of Terry's Texas Rangers.
