  • Who is Making Federal Cavalry Trousers?

    Hey All,

One of the guys in my unit is looking to buy a pair of new Federal cavalry trousers for this season. I recommended a few vendors that I've used in the past/know to have quality products, and all of them said that they aren't making mounted trousers at this point. Do any of you know for sure that a quality vendor is making mounted trousers at this time?

    Tom,

Have him contact Chris Sullivan at Stoney Brook. Wonderful quality, fair price and fantastic customer service and follow up!

If you don't have contact info, let me know and I can p.m. Chris's email address.

      Mark,
Already tried that, but as of a month ago Chris wasn't taking orders for mounted trousers.

          Hi Jim,

I did in fact see that. The trousers aren't for me, but for one of my guys. It seems as though many of the previous sources for good mounted trousers have dried up. Thanks!

            Tom,

I was wondering about what percentage of the US mounted troops were issued "cavalry trousers" vs the number who received standard issue infantry trousers, especially as the war went on? I know that on the CS side there were virtually no formal Cavalry trousers and everything from civilian attire to infantry issue, etc. have been found.

Is this something that is information readily accessible?

            thanks,

Here's an ignorant question from an infantry guy:
Were mounted trousers reenforced during construction or was the extra cloth simply added to a pair of foot trousers?

If the latter, then perhaps a feller could order foot trousers & yardage from the same bolt?

                Mark,

Given the nature of the Federal supply system I'm pretty sure most mounted men got mounted Trousers. The Federal government received 1,688,746 pairs of Mounted trousers from May 1st 1861 to October 1865. During the same time period, 6,068,049 pairs of Foot Trousers were received.

I think there is mention of when Wilder's brigade became mounted infantry they got a bunch of untrimmed uniform jackets and mounted pattern trousers. I'm working from memory so I may be mistaken.....

P.S. I'm pretty sure Charlie Childs still makes kits for Mounted Trousers.

Give Joe Blunt (Carter & Jasper) a shout, he's made them in the past.

To answer the question as to how they were constructed the inseam and the part of the back seam under the reinforcement are turned to the outsid so as not to pinch the wears legs. That and the addition of buttons in the cuff and higher back below the waist band are the only major differnces.

I was of the impression Wilders men untrimmed their trimmed uniform jackets.

                          John,
The trousers were made as mounted trousers, and were constructed as such from the beginning.

                          Mark,
From all that I have seen in QM returns and such, mounted men in federal service would have gotten mounted trousers. I'm sure you could find some who had foot trousers, but they would have been the exception.

To everyone else: Thanks for the input!
