  • Mounted trousers

Hello everyone. Some buddies of mine and I are heading out for a campaign as Cavalry of the 3rd Alabama Cav and I have a pair of just plain (not mounted) brown jean wool CS trousers and I was wondering if the CS Army ever did actually issue mounted trousers. It was a question that literally just hit me and so it is bugging me to no end andI have looked on this forum and have researched in other places but it keeps taking me to jackets ad everywhere else it still just talks about jackets sooo.. Thanks.

    Re: Mounted trousers

Well, Thank you for trying to research the subject yourself. It is a good question.
As a starting qualifier I must say that I am not a qualified uniform/clothing student let alone an expert. I have not personally done any research on the subject nor have I ever seen any elsewhere. However, I am a reader. Still, not even snippets of "perhaps" or "possibles" in the many records, correspondence, diaries and reminiscences that I have read. But I will try to answer.
What amounts to conjecture, which is oft bantered about and repeated, reverberates around the forums and campfires but, has the same resounding ring.....nyet!
Now, in reality that does not mean anything. The lack of evidence does not constitute a void. One could surmise that "some" were made in the depot system or perhaps privately. Its possible. One only has to look at the well known story of the 7th cavalry in 1876 for an example of the necessity and therefore adaption of "privately" made canvas lined trousers. However, as a CS issue item or even a practice (civilian or otherwise) it dramatically fails the "period/everyday/common" (PEC) question as do so many other items (need we even suggest the leopard skin trousers again?). So, in summary until someone can produce qualitative if not quantitative evidence it should not seriously be considered by authentics.
Perhaps others with more information or knowledge than I, can provide "the" definitive answer or even a better answer? Has anyone ever seen real documentation or mention of such?
